The Steelers released center Alex Stepanovich, wide receiver Martin Nance, wide receiver Steven Black and safety Derrick Richardson on Monday and placed offensive lineman Darnell Stapleton on injured reserve, thus ending his season. Stapleton had arthroscopic surgery to on his knee a few weeks ago and the knee will likely need further work and rehab. Stepanovich had been signed to give depth at the center position during training camp and was never considered a serious canidate for a roster spot. Nance was a former practice squad player of the Steelers and both Black and Richardson were undrafted Read more [...]

Isaac Redman Losing The Numbers Game

As the clock ticks closer to the date when the rosters must be paired down to 53, the closer the Steelers get to the decision of whether or not to keep free agent running back, Isaac Redman. Without a doubt, Redman has turned some heads in training camp, but with the rise of fellow rookie, Stefan Logan, and the need to undoubtedly increase field position in the return game, Logan could be the unlikeliest of players to have a hand in Redman not making the roster. Redman has been working on special teams as well, but is clearly not a threat to fellow special team ace, Carey Davis and Davis can carry Read more [...]
Ed Bouchette of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports that defensive end Brett Keisel will have a new 5 year contract extension by the end of today. Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin has indicated that quarterback Ben Roethlisberger will play a little on Thursday night in the preseason finale against the Carolina Panthers. Scott Brown has his stab at the final 53 man roster up for viewing. If you missed my stab at it, here it is. Dale Lolley has a look at the progress second year receiver Limas Sweed has made thus far in the pre-season. Running back Rashard Mendenhall is making a good impression Read more [...]

Best Guess At The First 5 Players Cut

The Steelers need to cut 5 players on September 1st to get down to 75 players. Below is my best guess at the five players that will be released on Tuesday. All 5 players were free agent signings after the 2009 draft.

Preseason Game 3 Recap: Steelers 17 Bills 0

What a difference a week makes. The Steelers looked like the defending Super Bowl champions on Saturday night as they shut out the Buffalo Bills 17-0. Starting quarterback Ben Roethlisberger showed no ill effects of the bruised ACL that kept him out of last Saturday's game versus the Washington Redskins. Roethlisberger was 15 for 19 passing for 168 yards and showed a great arm and better decision making. Second year running back Rashard Mendenhall looks better ever game as he carried 16 times for 48 yards and one touchdown. The one black mark on his performance was a fumble on the second Steelers Read more [...]
Audio from Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin post game press conference following the week 3 pre-season win against the Buffalo Bills On Saturday August 29th, 2009. [audio:http://www.steelersdepot.com/audio/mike_tomlin_8_29_2009_press_conference.mp3] [phpbay]new steelers, 3, "", ""[/phpbay] Mike Tomlin: It was a productive outing for us. It is great when you can pitch a shutout, even in August. There were some really good things; there were also some things we fell short in. We’re not going to over-analyze it. We are going to look at the tape like we always do at this time of year and Read more [...]

10 Things To Look For Tonight Versus Buffalo

Here are 10 things to look for tonight in the third preseason game versus the Buffalo Bills: Joystick Part II - Stefan Logan will likely get the second half return duties of punts and kickoffs. Another strong performance should cement a spot on the final 53 man roster. Limas In The X Spot - With Santonio Holmes out tonight, Limas Sweed will likely get a look at the X spot. Sweed needs to show he can get separation and catch everything thrown his way. Waltzing Mewelde - Hopefully running back Mewelde Moore gets his first action of the pre season tonight. Look for him on third downs tonight Read more [...]

Steelers Versus Bills Injury Report

Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said in his Thursday afternoon press conference that quarterback Dennis Dixon (shoulder), tight end Sean McHugh (knee) and offensive lineman Darnell Stapleton (knee) will not play against Buffalo on Saturday night. Tomlin also noted that kicker Jeff Reed (ankle), wide receiver Santonio Holmes (back), running back Willie Parker (hamstring), fullback Frank Summers (hamstring) and defensive tackle Steve McLendon (elbow) are questionable to play as well. The Steelers starters will play at the first half against the Bills also according to Tomlin. [phpbay]Steelers Bills, Read more [...]

Stefan Logan Ain’t Going Back To The CFL

After the return performance CFL free agent return man Stefan Logan put on Saturday night versus the Washington Redskins, he is no longer a secret to the rest of the NFL. Sure Logan is pretty much one dimensional from a special teams point and would likely only see time at wide receiver or running back in an emergency situation, but he is much better being the 53rd man on the roster instead of someone else's. Several teams have questions marks in their return game, most notable the Tennessee Titans, who the Steelers open the season against. The Titans lost Chris Carr via free agency in the off-season Read more [...]
Wide receiver Santonio Holmes (back) running back Willie Parker (hamstring), fullback Frank Summers (hamstring), quarterback Dennis Dixon (shoulder), offensive lineman Darnell Stapleton (knee) and tight end Sean McHugh were all sidelined from practice on Wednesday. Holmes and Parker both seem unlikely to play Saturday against Buffalo if they do not practice Thursday. Offensive lineman Darnell Stapleton looks to return to practice as early as next week after having arthroscopic surgery on his left knee in early August. Linebacker James Harrison and tackle Jeremy Parquet were involved in a Read more [...]

Was Frank Summers Just All Fan Hype?

I admit, I love rooting for the late round draft picks, who doesn't? Steeler Nation is notorious for it. The two most talked about 2009 draft picks by Steeler fans have been Frank Summers and A.Q. Shipley. Steelers fans have visions of Jerome Bettis or Chris Fuamatu-Ma'afala running through their heads when they think about the Tank. The only problem is, it seems the Steeler coaching staff see something different. Summers has been shifted to the fullback position in an already crowded backfield and is now suffering from a hamstring injury and body tightness. Not what you want to happen if you are Read more [...]
Wide receiver Santonio Holmes (bacK), tackle Jason Capizzi (shoulder), running back Willie Parker (hamstring), fullback Frank Summers, tight end Sean McHugh (knee), quarterback Dennis Dixon (shoulder) and guard Darnell Stapleton (knee) all sat out on Tuesday. McHugh, Dixon and Stapleton have been ruled out for the Saturday night game versus the Buffalo Bills and Summers is iffy. Wide receiver Hines Ward was given the day off. The chances of rookie tight end David Johnson making the roster are looking better and better. Especially after it was announced on Tuesday that Sean McHugh would be undergoing Read more [...]

Sean McHugh To Have Knee Surgery

Tight end/fullback Sean McHugh will have knee cleanup surgery according to Steel City Insider, Jim Wexell. McHugh has been battling rookie David Johnson for a roster spot, but has missed practice time due to his knee. McHugh signed a three-year contract in the offseason, but he could be pushed out of his role by Johnson.
