Steelers Leaning To Moving Essex To Left Tackle?

NFL.com reporter Jason La Canfora is reporting on Twitter that the Steelers are seriously considering moving right guard Trai Essex to left tackle and current left tackle Max Starks to the right tackle spot in place of the injured Willie Colon. Colon had surgery this morning on his right Achilles and is lost for the season as most know. The Steelers had brought in free agent tackle Flozell Adams on Tuesday for a look, but could be asking as much as 4 million a year, which is way out of line for what the Steelers would want to pay him. I mentioned several options myself at right tackle, but La Canfora Read more [...]
Gerry Dulac reports that fifth-round draft pick, Chris Scott will have surgery today to repair a broken foot sustained while working out at the University of Tennessee. Dulac says Scott is expected to be out approximately three months. It is unclear if Scott will be placed on injured reserve or the reserve PUP list to start the season, but being he misses all of camp, my money is he will be IR'ed sometime this week. McKeesport Daily News Steelers beat writer Mark Kaboly joined the FAN morning show on Tuesday to talk about Willie Colon’s injury and who he thinks steps in his spot. Mark talks Read more [...]
2010 was already slated to be a year in which the Steelers focused more on getting back to a power running game with much more balance on offense. The suspension of quarterback Ben Roethlisberger in April, made it even more apparent that the running game would be relied upon more heavily as well. Let's face it, regardless if it is Byron Leftwich or Dennis Dixon under center for the first 4 weeks, neither can be relied on to throw 33 times a game like Big Ben averaged in 2009. Now let us throw in the loss of right tackle Willie Colon. According to the offensive tackle stats on Pro Football Focus, Read more [...]
Not only did the Steelers lose right tackle Willie Colon for the year on Monday, it has now been announced that rookie offensive lineman Chris Scott suffered a foot injury while working out at the University of Tennessee last week as well. Both Colon and Scott are scheduled to have to surgery on Wednesday. Colon tore his right Achilles and will be out for the year. The seriousness of the foot injury to Scott, one of the Steelers fifth-round picks n this year's draft, is unknown, but he surely will not be ready for the start of training camp regardless. Being down two lineman now justifies the reason Read more [...]

Free Agent T Flozell Adams Visits Steelers

The Steelers may not wait long to find an experienced replacement for injured right tackle Willie Colon as free agent tackle Flozell Adams was at the Steelers practice facility today visiting with the organization. Adams was put through a workout and physical with the team. Adams asked for his release earlier this year from the Dallas Cowboys when it became apparent that the Cowboys were going to release him as he was due a $2.5 million roster bonus in April to go along with a base salary of more than $5 million. If indeed signed, Adams could play left tackle allowing Max Starks to move to right Read more [...]
If it was not bad enough that right tackle Willie Colon tore his Achilles on Wednesday, he lost in the free agent game as well when the owners and players' union failed to agree to a new collective bargaining agreement by the beginning of March. Colon was sheduled to be an unrestricted free agent, but the lack of a new deal triggered a clause that pushed from five to six the years of service a player has to accrue before he can become an unrestricted free agent. Colon was tendered a one year deal by the Steelers instead as a restricted free agent this offseason and still won't be able to test the Read more [...]
As it stands at this early stage, things do not look good for right tackle Willie Colon. Colon suffered a right Achilles injury today while working out at Steelers' headquarters. Colon left the facility on crutches and the ever important MRI results are now awaited. If he has indeed torn Achilles tendon, he will be lost for the season and might have played his final game in the black and gold. If indeed he misses any time, the Steelers have several options. Jonathan Scott was signed as an unrestricted free agent from the Bills in the offseason where he started eight games under new offensive Read more [...]

Pro Football Scout reporter Adam Caplan is reporting on Twitter that Steelers right tackle Willie Colon suffered an Achilles injury while working out this morning and a MRI is pending. We will have more on this as we get but for now Joe Linta, Colon's agent says there's no update on extent of injury as of yet. Colon was drafted by the Steelers in the fourth round of the 2006 NFL Draft and recently signed his one-year, $2.521 million restricted free agent tender back in April of this year. If Colon is lost for any period of time, the Steelers would likely let free agent Jonathan Scott or Tony Hills Read more [...]
Doug Farrar of Yahoo Sports and Football Outsiders has contributed an article as part of Yahoo's Under Surveillance series prior to NFL training camps that looks at the major strengths and weaknesses of all 32 NFL teams. Farrar points out the Steelers biggest weakness being the inability to run the ball consistently and offers up a solution of more bunch receiver formations in 2010 and how the Steelers ran effectively out of that formation in 2009. Steelers safety Troy Polamalu gave a great interview to Tom Robinson of the Virginian-Pilot while he was in town for the William and Mary football camp. Polamalu said, owners would be selfish to lock out players for the 2011 season saying, "America needs football. Steelers running back Rashard Mendenhall and running backs coach Kirby Wilson helped coach in the four-day football camp in Miesau, Germany. Seems not too many Steeler fans were present. The kids attending Coach Mike Tomlin's youth football camp at Mars Area High School got a surprise visit from Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger on Wednesday. While it was most definitely a great PR move by Big Ben, he made it clear that it's his intention to be back next year as well. Little things like this will add up over time and restore his character to the fans and the team. Steelers safety Troy Polamalu worked with kids attending the Colonial All-Pro Football Camp at William & Mary on Tuesday and said he loves the Steelers being the underdog again. He also goes on to say that quarterback Ben Roethlisberger troubles haven't been a distraction and the Steelers need to get back to playing Steeler football in 2010. Melinda Waldrop has a blog post on him here in the Daily Press and the photo gallery is here. From the "Who Cares File", quarterback Ben Roethlisberger was voted the third most disliked person in sports by Forbes. I thought Forbes was a business media outfit and who the hell did they round up for this poll? Tom Van Riper was interviewed by Joe Starkey to discuss the list on 93.7 The Fan. Regardless, I think all of the negative Roethlisberger press is on tail end now. As long as he stays clean now, the hard stuff should be behind him. That is of course until Dog Fancy releases its poll. I am sure Michael Vick will be No.1 on it as well. To sum up the negativity against Big Ben in Pittsburgh, Read more [...]
Steelers defensive line coach John Mitchell says he feels great about the defensive line going into camp. Starters Aaron Smith, Casey Hampton and Brett Keisel are all healthy and in great shape while Ziggy Hood should be able to contribute more this year as he is playing with better pad level, using his hands better and staying on his feet more this offseason. Mitchell hopes to rotate in Hood, Nick Eason and Chris Hoke to keep the line fresher with no drop offs this season. Steelers.com has part 2 up of the "Ask The Steelers" segment with rookie running back Jonathan Dwyer. The supplemental Read more [...]
