2011 Draft

Steelers Defensive Backs Coach Carnell Lake Press Conference On Curtis Brown

New Steelers defensive backs coach Carnell Lake held a press conference following the selection of Texas cornerback Curtis Brown with the 31st pick of the 3rd round of the 2011 NFL draft. Lake said that Brown is the best cover corner coming out of Texas this year. Says Aaron Williams is bigger, but the Steelers thought of him more as a safety. He said Brown is a cover corner that can play the nickel as well as outside corner. Lake went on to say Brown has good hands, but did not have many interceptions because teams threw away from him, because he possesses the best coverage skills of all the Texas corners. Lake thinks he will be able to contribute faster because he is more developed. Overall he will help on third down right now. Lake hopes they get underrated cornerback Ike Taylor re-signed because he plays so well in bump and run and that is hard to find. If they can get Taylor back and get Brown involved, it will strenghen an already strong secondary. Lake says he is more quick than fast and says Dick LeBeau liked best that he is a solid cover corner. Lake called Brown scrappy and does not shy away from contact and is not afraid to throw his body around. He will get most of his time on 3rd downs early on. Has played special teams and should serve the Steelers well in that capacity. They do not think he will be looked at as a return man.
