2011 Draft

Steelers Draft CB Curtis Brown With 31st (95th overall) Pick Of The 3rd Round

The Steelers drafted cornerback Curtis Brown, from Texas with the 31st pick in the 3rd round (95th overall of the 2011 NFL draft. Brown was also a pre draft visitor to South Side and Brown has been a steady contributor at defensive back and on special teams throughout his career at Texas. Brown went on to play in all 52 games of his collegiate career, garnering all-conference honors for his play on defense in his final two years. He was also the recipient of the Frank Denius Award as Texas’ Most Valuable Special Teams Player during his junior season.

Brown is an exceptional athlete who developed into a fantastic football player over his career with the Longhorns. As a former standout prep wide receiver, he has explosive change of direction ability and loose hips to mirror receivers. He also boasts a size (5:11.5) and length (32 1/4-inch arms) combination that is much desired by National Football League franchises looking for cornerbacks.

New defensive backs coach Carnell Lake said Brown was the best cover corner at Texas and better than Aaron Williams, who the Steelers saw more as a safety. Lake says he will have to help on special teams and needs to get stronger, but is scrappy and quicker than fast. Lake also said that teams threw away from Brown more because he was better cover guy and thinks he can help the Steelers on 3rd downs this year as an extra corner and nickel back.
