I was planning to wait until after the first preseason game to post my first 53 man roster, but I have already had several requests to do it now. As many know I was able to nail the 53 man roster last offseason after the final preseason game. Here is the way this works. I will update my prediction from here on out after every preseason game leading up to the final roster cuts. There will be 5 of these in all with this being the first. I will notate in each update why I added or removed a player so you can follow my train of thought. There is no way this first one will be right, but here we go. Quite Read more [...]

Steelers 2011 Training Camp – Day Four Recap

Sunday was day 4 of Steelers training camp and once again the news got off to an early start as the Plaxico Burress watch is now over after he agreed to terms on a one year deal with the Jets for a little over $3 million. Perhaps the trip to Pittsburgh was just a ploy to drive his price tag up, but I am willing to bet the Steelers were not in the ballpark money wise. Whatever the reason was, it doesn't matter at this point. The next bit of news we got right before practice started is that the Steelers had agreed to terms with cornerback William Gay on a one-year deal. No terms were announce, but Read more [...]

Steelers Agree To Terms With RB Mewelde Moore

Mark Kaboly reports via Twitter that unrestricted free agent running back Mewelde Moore has agreed to terms on a contract to return to Pittsburgh. The Steelers are dead set at re-signing their own free agents this year to help lessen the stress of relying on inexperienced rookies on the roster. No terms have been announced yet, but it would figure to be a one or two year deal. Moore will likely resume his role as a the third down and change of pace back initially, but stands to have competition from 7th round draft pick Baron Batch, who is already turning heads in training camp. Last season Read more [...]
Unrestricted free agent tight end Daniel Graham visited the Steelers on Saturday, but he left without a contract. According to a tweet by Josina Anderson, Graham has agreed to terms with the Titans today. The Steelers are still perhaps in the market for a second run blocking and pass catching tight end after losing unrestricted free agent Matt Spaeth to the Bears last week. The Steelers still have David Johnson on the roster, but he is best suited for an H-back role. Outside of Johnson, the Steelers have a slew of undrafted free agent tight ends in camp and that includes Weslye Saunders. Look Read more [...]
Steelers restricted free agent quarterback Dennis Dixon has yet to sign is tender and his agent Jeff Sperbeck told ESPN that his client would prefer a chance to compete elsewhere rather than be a backup for the Steelers this year. "Dennis would love the opportunity to start," Sperbeck said. "Yes, we would look forward to an opportunity for a trade -- it's a starting opportunity we're looking for." The Steelers placed a fifth-round tender of around $1.2 million on Dixon prior to the lockout and he can entertain offers from others teams until until Aug. 20 and then his rights revert back exclusively Read more [...]

Steelers Agree To Terms With CB William Gay

Another day and another Steelers unrestricted free agent is back in the fold as Steelers Digest is reporting that the Steelers have agreed to terms with cornerback William Gay. Gay was unrestricted and will presumably be back to compete for the nickel corner job again this year. Gay was chosen by the Steelers with the 170th pick (5th round) of the 2007 NFL Draft. The Steelers once again choose to re-sign their own free agent corners as Ike Taylor agreed to term last week as the Steelers slowly transition to youth in the secondary after they drafted cornerbacks Curtis Brown and Cortez Allen back Read more [...]
Plax Watch 2011 is officially over now as wide receiver Plaxico Burress has agreed to a one-year deal with the Jets for a little over $3 million. The Steelers certainly had interest in Burress as he visited Latrobe for most of the day on Saturday and Director of Football Operations Kevin Colbert said there was mutual interest on Saturday, but that interest evidently revolved around top dollar. I have said all along that I did not think Burress would be back and the Steelers being up against the salary cap further hurt his chances of returning. Burress will be 34 years old by the time the season Read more [...]
Here we are three days into training camp and although there has not been much to report on, I figured I would take this time to give a few of my own thoughts of early camp happenings. I am not hopping on the John Clay bandwagon until I see him attempt to do the little things needed to contribute. There is plenty of film on him running through big holes and some more of him fumbling, but there is not much else. He looks like a one dimensional back right now and until I see that he can pick up a blitz or carry out assignments without the ball, I am with holding judgment. Of course if he picks up Read more [...]
Season 2, Episode 3 of The Terrible Podcast is up and day 3 of Steelers training camp is in the books now. I am joined by Mark Kaboly from the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review who had the epic Plaxico Burress watch going on Twitter today as he gave a play-by-play of the Burress visit. Make sure you are following him at @MarkKaboly_Trib. We talk about the Burress visit and the chances of him signing with the Steelers to get the interview off to a fast start. I ask Mark if he thinks the offseason foot surgeries that Emmanuel Sanders had is behind the interest in Burress. We talk about the Steelers salary Read more [...]
Steelers Digest is reporting via Twitter that the Steelers have agreed to terms with unrestricted free agent punter Daniel Sepulveda pending a physical. No terms of the deal are known yet, but it comes as a bit of a surprise as it had been reported that Sepulveda would be visiting the Texans today and it looked as if they were prepared to let him walk. Sepulveda was drafted by the Steelers in the fourth round of the 2007 NFL Draft and has suffered multiple right ACL injuries with the latest coming in a Sunday night 13-10 victory over Baltimore last season. Punter Jeremy Kapinos, who was signed Read more [...]
On Saturday, day 3 of training camp started off quickly again as Plaxico Burress was at Latrobe to visit with Mike Tomlin, Kevin Colbert, Omar Kahn and spend some time with his former teammates. Burress was at training camp most of the day Pittsburgh Tribune-Review beat writer Mark Kaboly had a PlaxWatch going throughout the afternoon with great coverage. Burress looked very comfortable per reports and appeared to have a one-on-one with Colbert and Kahn to perhaps talk numbers. Afterwards he was seen making several cell phone calls and smiling quite a bit. It would be easy to speculate that a deal Read more [...]

Free Agent TE Daniel Graham Visits Steelers

In addition to Plaxico Burress, veteran tight end Daniel Graham is also is visiting the Steelers today. The Steelers might be interested in signing him to back-up Heath Miller on the roster as unrestricted free agent Matt Spaeth will not be returning after he signed with the Bears a few days ago. Graham is a former 2002 first round draft pick by the Patriots and was selected as the 21st overall choice. Graham recorded only 15 receptions for 150 yards, and one touchdown in his rookie year. He was named the Patriots offensive team captain in 2006, but was not brought back in 2007 and signed with Read more [...]
Kevin Colbert held a Saturday morning press conference to update the current state of the roster, salary cap situation and talk about the possibility that the Steelers could still sign Plaxico Burress. Burress was still meeting with head coach Mike Tomlin and Colbert said that he looked good and seemed good. Colbert said that here's always a comfort zone when you know the player you might bring back and Burress will not be put through any type of work-out first if they indeed decide to sign him. Colbert said he was not sure how much Burress would demand, but did not seem too concerned about how Read more [...]

Steelers Sign UDFA DL Corbin Bryant

A 21st undrafted free agent player was signed by the Steelers this morning as Northwestern defensive lineman Corbin Bryant was signed. The Steelers had some interest in Bryant prior to the draft as he reportedly was one of the 30 players they had in for a pre draft visit. The 6-foot-4, 298-pound Bryant ran the 40-yard dash in 5.02 seconds at his Pro Day workout bench pressed 225 pounds 31 times as 28 NFL teams attended the workout. He also ran a 4.55 short shuttle, a 7.34 three-cone drill and turned in a 27 1/2 inch vertical leap and an 8 foot 6 broad jump. Bryant recorded eight tackles for Read more [...]
I was on Trib Live Radio yesterday morning with Ken Laird and was asked about my Steelers offensive line grading that I did last year for every week of the season. The discussion was centered around the recent moves the Steelers have made in releasing Max Starks and Flozell Adams and re-signing Willie Colon and Jonathan Scott. I was telling Laird how well I thought Scott did towards the end of 2010 and how I saw him really make improvement from when he first took over for Starks. I graded every play of every game last year and you can see the breakdown of each game by starting here. I go play by Read more [...]
