Steelers Agree To Terms With RB Mewelde Moore

Mark Kaboly reports via Twitter that unrestricted free agent running back Mewelde Moore has agreed to terms on a contract to return to Pittsburgh. The Steelers are dead set at re-signing their own free agents this year to help lessen the stress of relying on inexperienced rookies on the roster. No terms have been announced yet, but it would figure to be a one or two year deal.

Moore will likely resume his role as a the third down and change of pace back initially, but stands to have competition from 7th round draft pick Baron Batch, who is already turning heads in training camp. Last season Moore rushed for 99 yards on 33 carries in 15 games. He also caught 26 balls during the regular season for 205 yards.

Moore is considered a Mike Tomlin guy as he was signed as a free agent after Tomlin took over as head coach in 2008. Moore played for the Vikings before coming to Pittsburgh where Tomlin was the defensive coordinator.

Well, I wasn’t too impressed with the 2010 version of Moore. I guess the mgmt thinks he will look more like the 2009 Moore. Or maybe the feel more confident with Moore in the event there is an injury to Mendenhall.

  • Do you think these last couple of moves (mewelde, william gay, sepulveda) are just to fill those last 3-4 roster spots with vet min / no signing bonus contracts? Seems like a win / win. It would certainly give the rookies someone to compete with, with no real risk. If they carry 4 RB’s like last year, Mewelde could groom Baron Batch, with Dwyer getting the axe and Clay going on the PS. If Mewelde has lost a step then no harm / no foul.

if Batch gets cut and/or practice squad I will be upset.

These players can still get cut.. Moore, Gay, etc.

My question is… who the heck are they going to get under cap by Thursday with these moves???
I see a big move… Aaron Smith takes major pay cut… or cut.

Every time I read one of these resignings (other than Gay), I’m initially excited. That is followed almost immediately by concern, wondering if this means that they’re going to have to cut a more expensive player.

I’m all for getting Mewelde back – he’s a more valuable player than his numbers might suggest, and he’s a very reliable guy to have in case of an injury to Mendy. And he seems to be a great team player, which is what you want to see from someone like this who won’t get the ball a whole lot. I just hope they’re able to make the cap space by restructuring, and not by making major cuts.

no way not with the chance for big heyward to learn from the best 3-4 end of the last 20 years maybe longer. Paycut maybe, but cut would be much bigger than a big move.
