Steelers Release 21 Players & Place Byron Leftwich On Injured Reserve

The Steelers roster cuts have started as the team starts the march towards gettuing down to 53 players from the 80 currently on the roster. The first two names to surface this afternoon are kicker Swayze Waters and linebacker Mortty Ivy. Waters was a long-shot to beat out Shaun Suisham for the kicking job after Suisham was signed to a 4-year deal just a matter of weeks ago. Waters showed a strong leg during camp on both kickoffs and field goals, but missed a 27-yard field goal against the Eagles in the second preseason game. Waters has a good chance at landing elsewhere at some point this season.

Ivy played in all four preseason games for the Steelers at linebacker and recorded 19 tackles during that span. He is a West Virginia product and has spent time on the Panthers, Rams and Dolphins practice squads after going undrafted in 2009. The Steelers might be hoping he clears waivers so they can sign him to the practice squad, but Ivy could get interest from other teams looking for linebacker depth.

Byron Leftwich was placed on injured reserve.
