Steelers Week 3 Coverage Stats Versus Colts

Below are the Steelers coverage stats for the week 3 Sunday night game against the Indianapolis Colts. They are broken down by play and include down and distance, line of scrimmage, direction, yards gained, yards after catch, personnel the offense used, defensive package, number of pass rushers and whether or not the defense blitzed on the play.

It is evident that the pass defense was good last night as they allowed less than a 50% completion rate and less than 4 yards per attempt. Ike Taylor was once again stellar as he was targeted 12 times and allowed just 3 catches on the night.

There were 7 screen like passes that can\’t be charged to a coverage and all of these amounted to just 22 yards. The Steelers also did a pretty good job tackling for the most part on the night as they allowed just 68 yards after the catch by my count.

They defense also did a good job of mixing in the blitzes this week early in the game as the stats show.

About Dave Bryan

I am, I'm me. 40 something, retired and a life long Steelers fan.
  • Matt Dziabo

I also put this in the game recap but:
Anyone else think Lebeau should go back to using the dime defense? The 2 dogs/ 1 bone thing might work for the rookie CBs or use Mundy. Timmons could be a good change of pace speed rusher and/or more opportunities to rest Farrior and Harrison.

  • Scott

Apparently, the only ones capable of calling defensive signals are Farrior and Foote. Am I right? Is that the reason Lebeau doesn’t go to the dime?

  • burgh_fan

I always look forward to seeing this breakdown. I could have sworn I seen more balls thrown at Lewis than 3 though.

  • Rich Johnston

I think you probably don’t dime the colts because they always have Dallas Clark and a back in the game. They don’t do 4/5 WR sets. Going forward, it’ll be interesting to see whether Lebeau uses any dime. Even if he does, you might see it as a 1-4-6 set with only Smith or Ziggy in at DL and all 4 linebackers still in the game.

  • CoverCorner

Those stats on Lewis seems right to me, I was watching to see how he would do and noticed they didn’t throw at him at all in the first 3 quarters even though he spent most of that time manned up on Garcon. It wasn’t until LeBeau went to his “prevent” mode that they got a couple in front of him. Its hard to see on TV when the ball doesn’t go that way, but I suspect the film will show some pretty good coverage, if they chose to throw at Ike instead. We might have an answer for LCB.

  • fire arians

i hope you’re right because b-mac isn’t the answer. if lewis was able to man up on garcon and shut him out for most of the game, then that is a very good sign.

  • burgh_fan

I thought it was about 4 or 5 so I didn’t think it was that far off.
