Willie Colon To Have Surgery On Torn Triceps & Likely Out Season

Ed Bouchette has cleared up the early report we gave you on Steelers left tackle Willie Colon. Bouchette reports that Colon indeed has torn triceps and he will have surgery Tuesday morning to repair the injury. His agent Joe Linta confirmed the injury. The injury means that the 2011 season is now likely over for Colon after just one game and he will likely be placed on injured reserve for the second season in a row. It is believed that Colon suffered the injury on an attempted fumble recovery during the second half on Sunday.

Colon was lost last season prior to training camp with a torn Achilles. The Steelers signed veteran free agent Flozell Adams to play right tackle, but Adams was released right after the Steelers reported to training camp this year in an obvious $5 million salary dump. The Steelers may consider trying to bring back Adams now or veteran Max Starks. Starks was released prior to training camp. The only other option the Steelers have is to let rookie Marcus Gilbert play right tackle.

I hate to see guys go down for the entire year… now multiple years.
Aaron Smith, Sepulveda, etc. Big risk and big bucks lost!!! not to mention, the O-line is really hurting now!!

    Agreed , 3 losses , not a good trend . 1 SB 2. Opener 3. Colon! Not Good

I’d sign Flozell for RT and give Gilbert a shot at LT, that’s just me.

    Oh no. NOT good.

The question is, how much will Flozell be willing to play for? He was due for $5M, I’m sure he won’t play for less than half of that.

Does Colon still count against the Salary Cap? If so, they don’t have much room to go after somebody…

  • SteelersDepot

yes, he still counts against cap.

They don’t like to shuffle any more than they have to, and Gilbert is not ready to play LT. No my guess is that they keep Scott where he is, slot Gilbert (or maybe Foster) in at RT, and look to sign a cheap vet for depth. Although according to Dulac on twitter, it’s not going to be Flozell. Max Starks?

That doesn’t even address the problem of horrible guard play. Man it sucks to watch the Steelers crappy Oline year in and year out take more beatings as the injuries pile up.

I have another question: I realize that Colon counts against the cap but when players are injured/go on IR, is it the Steelers responsibility to pay his salary or is covered by some type of insurance policy?
