Steelers Release RB Davis & LB Ivy From Practice Squad, Sign S Cromartie-Smith & DT Joseph

The Steelers made a few practice squad moves today as they released running back Tristan Davis and linebacker Mortty Ivy and signed safety Da’mon Cromartie-Smith and defensive tackle Elisha Joseph to take their places.

Davis was signed prior to the week 5 game against the Titans to emulate running back Chris Johnson on the scout team. Ivy was with the Steelers during training camp this past offseason. Cromartie-Smith now returns as the Steelers likely want depth in case Troy Polamalu were to have a setback with his concussion this week. Joseph is an undrafted rookie free-agent defensive tackle out of Temple and spent the preseason with the Packers. He measured in at 6-foot-2, 290 pounds at his Pro Day back in March and ran the 40-yard dash in just over 5 seconds flat. He also completed 43 repetitions on the 225-pound bench press. He started all 12 games at nose tackle for the Temple as a senior.

a guy can bench 225 LBS *43 reps can’t make the roster… wow…this is the NFL.

  • Intropy

I think Ivy will land on somebody’s practice squad.

You think the Hampton injury is more serious then they’re letting on?

  • SteelersDepot

Move is more because of Hoke this week & the stinger. Id already say Hampton is serious as this will likely be 3rd game in a row he misses.

    Dave –

I know the Steelers lost Thadius Gibson to the 49’ers when they elected to keep Aaron Smith on the roster last year. The 49’ers let him go this year, and the Steelers tried to claim him off waivers in camp this year. The Redskins claimed him, but he did not make the team and they elected not to add him to their pracitce squad, even though he was apparently practice squad eliigable.

When the Texan’s lost Mario several weeks ago, they worked Gibson out, but apparently did not sign him. Do you think the Steelers might still have an interest in him, or have so many “turn downs” sealed his fate as an NFL prospect?
