Steelers Sign Tristan Davis To Practice Squad, Release Damon Cromartie-Smith

As expected the Steelers also announced a practice squad move this morning as safety Damon Cromartie-Smith was released from the 8 man practice squad and running back Tristan Davis was signed to take his spot. The Steelers signing of Davis is due to the injuries to Rashard Mendenhall and Mewelde Moore. Mendenhall has a strained hamstring while Moore has a bad ankle. Davis will be used this week to emulate Titans running back Chris Johnson in practice. Cromartie-Smith had been originally signed by the Steelers as an undrafted free agent last season and he spent all of 2010 on the practice squad.

I liked Cromartie-Smith mainly for his size. Steelers must like who they have now to cut him.

Is he related to the other Cromarties in the NFL which are pretty good?

I don’t like seeing Cromartie-Smith let go. I hope no one picks him up so he can be added again later. I can’t think the Steelers are happy with their safety situation. Mundy is capable, and may even become a starter one day, but Will Allen is just one of Tomlin’s guys, and I don’t like him taking up a roster spot for his special teams play. He’s shown nothing at the safety position when he’s played. I thought a potential future starter should have been drafted last year, and think that safety should be addressed in the draft this year.

Thought Damon played well in preseason…almost thought he would make the team…Im feeling we feel good about our S situation at the moment and we plan to get him back shortly
