Steelers Fail To Clinch Playoff Spot In Week 14

The Pittsburgh Steelers will have to wait at least another week to clinch a spot in the 2011 playoffs as the Denver Broncos knocked off the Chicago Bears 13-10 in overtime this evening to prevent the Steelers from clinching.

Up until the overtime win by the Broncos the day was shaping up for the Steelers to clinch at least the 6th seed in the AFC at worst after the Houston Texans beat the Cincinnati Bengals, the Green Bay Packers beat the Oakland Raiders and the New Orleans Saints beat the Tennessee Titans. All the Steelers needed this evening was a Bears win over the Broncos and they would have clinched the playoff spot.

The Texans were able to clinch the AFC South with their win and the loss by the Titans today. The Steelers next play the San Francisco 49ers a week from Monday at Candlestick Park and clinch a playoff spot with a win or either a loss by the New York Jets or the Broncos next week. The Broncos host the New England Patriots, while the Jets visit the Philadelphia Eagles.

Dave: Can you please explain under what scenario the Steelers would not make the playoffs? I’ve been playing with the playoff generator for a while now and can’t figure it out. Thanks!

Think it involves the Raiders winning the west, the Steelers losing out, the Broncos somehow winning tiebreakers with Steelers on SOS. Still trying to get it nailed down.

It’s complicated essentially Pit,Ten, Oak & Den all end up 10-6. NYJ goes 11-5 to get first wirdcard. Den has to lose to KC to get Oak to win the division. Den, Pit & Ten are in a 3-way tie for the second wild card. Den wins that on common games.

    Ah yes, makes sense.

  • Msmcm

i dont think the steelers go 10-6 so dont put them
    in the equation

  • Msmcm

u dont have to explain because the steelers
will NOT lose their final 3 games

  • Peterluck69

flyingyuk what the hell? like were going to lose to the rams and the browns to not get a seed… but if we do we dont even deserve the playoffs

Dave: Can you break down fines levied to all teams this year. Where does that money go? goodells vacation fund

  • Flyingyuk

This scenario is definitely not going to happen. It would require 15 games (3 each for Den, Oak, Ten, NYJ and Pit) to go against the Steelers.

This was mostly an academic exercise on how crazy the NFL tiebreaking system is. The Steelers beat Den on tiebreakers, and they beat Ten on tiebreakers, but if you put all 3 together they lose out

That’s B.S. McCoy turned into a running back the moment he left the pocket.
