Report: Jim Caldwell To Join Ravens As Quarterbacks Coach

Adam Schefter is reporting tonight that former Indianapolis Colts head coach Jim Caldwell plans to join the Baltimore Ravens staff this upcoming week, likely as the quarterbacks coach. Caldwell reportedly visited with Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin on Saturday, presumably about a possible spot on the Steelers offensive coaching staff. Caldwell, who coached with Tomlin when the two were with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, has been speculated as a possible candidate for the Steelers open offensive coordinator position since it was announced last week that Bruce Arians was not offered a contract to return for the 2012 season.

If indeed the report about Caldwell is true, it would likely mean that the Steelers could be set to promote current quarterbacks coach Randy Fichtner to offensive coordinator as early as this week. Fichtner has been my top candidate since the news was announced that Arians would not return next season. Should Fichtner indeed be promoted, it would mean that there is an open quarterbacks coach position on the coaching staff and there remains a rumor floating around that that former West Virginia head coach Bill Stewart could be in line that for position. That remains only speculation at this time. Stewart gave Tomlin his first coaching job in 1995 at the Virginia Military Institute.
