Report: Mike Tomlin Checking Out Todd Haley & Alex Van Pelt

Jason La Canfora is reporting tonight via Twitter that Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin has made inquiries into former Kansas City Chiefs head coach Todd Haley and former Buffalo Bills offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt, presumably for the open offensive coordinator position with the Steelers. Both Haley and Van Pelt have links back to the Steelers organization as Haley is the son of Dick Haley, the Steelers former Director of Player Personnel and Van Pelt, a star college quarterback at the University of Pittsburgh, was drafted by the Steelers in the 8th round of the 1993 draft.

Haley was fired by the Chiefs late last season after being the head coach since 2009. Prior to that, Haley also was the Arizona Cardinals offensive coordinator from 2007-2008 and has worked for the Dallas Cowboys, Chicago Bears and New York Jets early in his coaching career.

Van Pelt, who also reportedly is being courted by the Bears for their open quarterbacks coach/passing game coordinator, got his coaching start with the old Frankfurt Galaxy in 2005 as the quarterbacks coach before climbing the ladder with the Bills. He was most recently the Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterbacks coach in 2010 and 2011 before being let go when, head coach and good friend of Tomlin, Raheem Morris was fired after the season. The St. Louis Rams and Indianapolis Colts also have interests in Van Pelt according to La Canfora.
