The Terrible Podcast – Talking Todd Haley & Weslye Saunders Episode

Steelers PodcastSeason 2, Episode 75 of The Terrible Podcast is up and David Todd and I have quite a bit to talk about in what continues to be a very busy start of the offseason for the Pittsburgh Steelers. We start out by talking about the report that surfaced Monday night that tight end Wesyle Saunders will be suspended for the first four games of the 2012 season and how it could possibly hurt the Steelers. There is still quite a bit of speculation surrounding the suspension and we admit we have to look up the suspension process as it relates to PEDS and all that surrounds that. Hopefully the young tight end out of South Carolina can get this straightened out.

Next we move into to discussing the recent hiring of Todd Haley as the Steelers new offensive coordinator. We discuss the past history of Haley and ponder how his initial relationship with Ben Roethlisberger will go. We expect there to be some heated discussions on camera throughout the season, and although he was not either of ours first choice, we agree that he has a bright offensive mind that can adapt to new personnel quickly. We are not ready to throw any temper tantrums just because he was not our first choice. Time as they say will tell as there is no grace period for him in our opinion.

Oh, there was a Super Bowl this past Sunday and we discuss the game as the well. Yes we give our two cents on the well talked about New England Patriots decision to let the New York Giants score at the end. We look at the options the Giants had and discuss a few things that surprised us in the game. We also ponder the future of Eli Manning and discuss how close the Steelers came to not getting Roethlisberger in that draft. Can you imagine Philip Rivers as the Steelers quarterback? Would the Steelers have had the same success had that indeed happened? We hash it out.

Dave, I wonder how the Steeler’s D would rank if they had to face top QB’s in their Division, instead of the weak sisters in AFC North? Last season they really only faced 3 top QB’s all season (Staub, Brady, Alex Smith); then Hasselbach, Dalton & Flacco as next tier (being generous); after that, the quality of QB’s they faced was poor, i.e. Curtis Painter, et al. Although they ranked high statistically, I believe the D this year was no where near as good as the last couple of years. In short, their stats were inflated by playing against lesser competition. I wonder how they would have ranked if they had to face Aaron Rodgers, Matt Stafford & Jay Cutler twice a year. The D is going downhill fast IMHO. They need some young defensive studs in the draft.

Reese, your observation is dead on the mark!! Not one time this past year did I hear any anylist utter what had become a Catch-mark D line one word description; Blitzburg..

A couple of character traits defining our new OC; highly competative and often confrontational. Channeled correctly, not only should this rejuvinate Ben & the O gang, but hopefully Tomlin will buy in, and participate?!?! Both coach Knoll and coach Cowher did, and it served them, the Steelers and the STEELER FANS very well!!
