Report: Mike Tolbert Expected To Land With Steelers Or Panthers

Kevin Acee, San Diego Chargers beat writer for the San Diego Union-Tribune, reports tonight on Twitter that unrestricted free agent running back Mike Tolbert is expected to land with either the Pittsburgh Steelers or Carolina Panthers. Acee added that he was told that the Tolbert situation isn\’t like the Malcom Floyd one in 2011, who returned last year after his deal was dead. Floyd was close to signing with the Baltimore Ravens last offseason, but ended back with the Chargers on a two-year deal.

Tolbert said on SiriusXM Radio just prior to the start of the 2012 NFL free agency period that the Steelers were certainly a team on his list that he could himself playing for. He is reportedly set to visit an undisclosed team Saturday morning according to his agent Joel Turner. Acee reports that negotiations with the Chargers hit a standstill Friday morning after they reached a critical stage Thursday night.

Tolbert had reportedly met with the Kansas City Chiefs on Thursday as well, who have already signed running back Peyton Hillis to a one-year deal this past week. Tolbert would be a fit in Pittsburgh and a solid compliment to Isaac Redman with Rashard Mendenhall expected to start the season on the PUP list. Until we know for sure that Tolbert has a meeting scheduled in Pittsburgh, it is hard to speculate further. Tolbert may have dropped his price a bit though after receiving a pretty cold reception at the start of the free agency period.

I am, I'm me. 40 something, retired and a life long Steelers fan.

Great news! I’m a huge Mike Tolbert fan. Pwerful, downhill runner, who also excels in the passing game.

Assuming the Steelers can offer up the money Tolbert feels he’s worth, he’s a fool if he doesn’t sign with the Steelers. With the current RB situation in Pittsburgh, Tolbert would have a legit shot at winning the number one RB roll. That same opportunity is unlikely in Carolina, because of all the money the Panthers have ties up in DeAngelo Williams.

Two days ago Tolbert was totally far fetched. What’s changed?

I like the potential pickup though.

Cutting Mendenhall saves about 2.3 million right? I guess Tolbert would be a better option at around that price considering that Mendenhall is at risk of missing part of the season.

Correct. If Tolbert is signed, you would figure Mendy is gone assuming he indeed falls under the injury benefit status & not an injury settlement that I posted about several weeks ago.

  • Jabsosteel

Thank goodness…let’s all hope that this goes through so that we can close the Mendy chapter once and for all. He’s been given more lives than a cat with this Steeler organization. Cut bait and move on.

Wait, don’t the Panthers have big money tied up in Williams and decent first rounder money tied up in Stewart for another year at least. How would it make sense to sign Tolbert? They couldn’t find enough carries for Williams last year as it was.

Yes, what other 6 people below me have said. Agreed…

I like Tolbert, I think grab him, cut mendenhall, use the spare cash to re-sign cotchery.

I like the the idea of Tolbert as a Mewelde Moore replacement. As a frontline starter, I have some reservations about his speed to the edge. Without it, the opposing defenses can colapse the box making it much harder to run between the tackles. Having him in a two back Pro-Set would be very interesting indeed.

This is some agents pipe dream, Steelers cant sign Tolbert they have no cap room and have to pay Mendehall whether he plays or not (salary cap)

  • BettisFan36

If they do bring in Tolbert, it seems that Pittsburgh staff doesn’t have much faith in Redman, Dryer, Batch, Clay, etc. to do the job… “The backfield is getting awful crowded.

  • JerryCola

Gerry Dulac just posted on his Twiiter account that Tolbert to the Steelers is not happening.

The Panthers are the last team in the NFL to need depth at RB. Mike Goodson is a solid change of pace, and they have the best rushing QB, Cam Newton. Maybe they should trade up for Trent Richardson too?..?..
