Report: Steelers Sign Former WVU TE Will Johnson & Bring Back WR Wes Lyons

According to Geoff Coyle of West Virginia Illustrated, the Pittsburgh Steelers have signed former West Virginia wide tight end Will Johnson after after impressing Pittsburgh scouts at the West Virginia Pro Day this past Friday. Johnson measures in at nearly 6 feet, 2 inches and weighed 242 pounds. He did 30 reps of 225 at the WVU pro day and posted an unofficial 40 time of 4.49 seconds. Johnson reportedly had a few teams interested in him last year during his own pro day, but he never was signed. Coyle reports that Johnson said that he has not been told specifically what position he will play, but he is preparing to play an H-back role.

Also according to Coyle, the Steelers also signed wide receiver Wes Lyons. who was with the Steelers during training camp and preseason last season. Lyons is known for his size at 6 foot 9 inches. He caught 3 passes for 63 yards in the 4 preseason games last year and was released prior to the start of the season.

TE sounds interesting, Lyons…ehh..just a camp body

I like these signings. Good physical specimens with no risk.

TE youtube vid shows mad promise. And don’t sell Wes Lyons short, because he is anything but. He showed some flash in pre-season. Sure there is room for improvement. But that’s what Steeler development is all about.

Not sure what (if anything) this means for the draft, but I’d rather not see us spend a high draft pick on a TE yet, so I like the move. As for Lyons, if his hands (among other things), improve it could be worth the investment. You have to like his size.

  • Rubem Dornas

I would like a TE with Lyons measures (6-9 instead of 6-2). 6-2 is a little bit short for a TE.

Guy runs a 4.49 and is that strong!! They even say his routes were crisp! Why H-back, throw him the ball! With the recievers we have and Heath, we could have weapons to catch the ball from every side!

I’m kinda excited… I like Lyons last preseason.
