Steelers Host Two Free Agents & Draft Prospect Brandon Brooks

Scott Brown is reporting today that the Steelers have brought in free agent tackle Demetrius Bell and former Stanford long snapper Zachary Nolan for visits today. In addition, the Steelers are hosting Miami (Ohio) guard Brandon Brooks down at the Southside facilities for a pre draft visit

Bell was originally drafted by the Buffalo Bills in the 7th round of the 2008 NFL draft out of Northwestern State. While with the Bills Bell played left tackle and was coached in 2009 by current Steelers offensive line coach Sean Kugler. He started just 6 games for the Bills in 2011.

Nolan was Stanford\’s starting long snapper from 2008-2010 and would likely only be signed to provide competition to Greg Warren in training camp

Brooks measured in at his pro day at 6050 and weighed 346 pounds. The Steelers coaching staff were responsible for putting Brooks through his pro day workout after he was not invited to the combine this year. He put up 36 reps on the bench and ran an unofficial 40 time of 4.99. He can play both guard spots and even tackle in emergency situations. I have been real high on Brooks for a while now and have the Steelers selecting him in the second round in my latest mock draft.

The Steelers will reportedly host Virginia outside linebacker/defensive end Cam Johnson for a pre draft visit next week according to Brandon George of the Dallas Morning News.

I am sure Ben will love the another alum being drafted. we know how Tomlin loves players with versatility. I just never liked guys they say can play guard and OT if needed to. if he can play OT than why is he playing Guard lol just a funny statement really. I understand it but does that really work out. I think we are lucky how well Gilbert has turned out so far. Hopefully brooks has a similar turnout.

  • Wouldn’t mind Demetrius Bell for the right price.
Brandon Brooks is one of a few guards in the draft I’d love to have.

Remember Marcus Gilbert played at a way higher level at Florida in the SEC. Night and day to playing and blocking at Miami of Ohio,no slam on Ben. But can he pull? I would love for Brooks to work out, don’t get me wrong I just don’t feel he is a 2nd rounder. Christopher no hard feeling’s. I would love to pick him up as a undrafted rookie!

You obviously have not seen tape on him or read anything on Brooks if you think he will go undrafted.Don’t take this the wrong way, but you might want to read up and watch more film on draft prospects.

I read on another general football site that Bell is suspposed to be pretty good but he gets hurt a lot. Don’t know much about him otherwise. Maybe if he is available for the right price.

I’ve seen Bell on some “best remaining FA” lists, and he obviously plays at a position of need. I’d like to see the Steelers take Adams or Martin with their first round draft pick, but getting Bell for the right price would be great. The Steelers are REALLY thin at OT. Does anyone know, however, if he’d be an upgrade over J. Scott? If the talent is a wash, then makes sense to go with the guy who has experience in the Steelers lineup (unless Bell comes cheaper).

Brooks’ stock definitely seems to be rising, and I wouldn’t have a second thought about the Steelers taking him in the 2nd round. However, I’ve seen him as low as the 5th round in some mocks. It’s always interesting the range of opinions! I’d love to see the Steelers get Brooks and Chapman in 2 & 3 in whatever order!

This only adds to the suspicions that Brandon Brooks has a good chance of becoming a Steeler. I hope they spend the first round pick on another position and address guard with a 2nd or 3rd.

measured in at 6050? thats pretty huge 😛

the last numbers is eighths. That 4 digit number is commonly used as height measurement for draft hopefuls.

The Bleacher Report Big Board has Brooks as the #93 prospect, calling him “the biggest snub of the combine”.

  • clint

I am going right now to watch something with Brooks was he invited to the combine? NFL video or just college games.

Steelers staff at his pro day pulled him off to the side and had him do positional drills,And then had him in for a visit on the 30th. They are interested in him so are other teams.
He had great numbers at his pro day, Yet he has to drop some weight lets face it. He lacks lateral quickness for pulling and screen blocking, This might come with dropping some pounds. But in reality he would be 10 times better than Keomateu pulling and missing guys.

    Don’t get me wrong I
would love to see this guy knock Ray Rays teeth out, and also stand over top of Haloti Nagati after cutting his knees out!
His stock is rising they might have to pull the trigger earlier to get this beast of a man.
Christopher you opened my eyes Steelers Nation for life!

Don’t really care about the long snapper…….But Bell would be a nice addition for low money and low signing bonus……. Then we could get rid of Scott I sure hope they dont keep scott for the money he’s signed for now……If they keep him he should have to take a pay cut at min. salary…… not worth the 2.2 million…….

  • Jprankster2005

I think Brooks would be a great pickup for the Steelers he put up some impressive numbers for how big he is….. I hope he’s still there in 2nd…… I like Worthy in the first and Brooks in 2nd… Then focus on other needs maybe another Guard or Tackle I think in the draft they should pickup atleast 3 OL guys…… And have em fight out for the spots….. OL u got locks pretty much in Gilbert, pouncey, Foster Colon and need some depth behind them besides scott and legursy….. I don’t understand why Scott is even still a Steeler put let him see what happens in training camp if injuries occur then i guess we will need him…….
