Another day and another Pittsburgh Steelers free agent has been re-signed as Trai Essex reports via Twitter that he is back with the Steelers. No terms of the deal have been announced, but it figures to be a one-year deal for the veteran minimum.
I am ecstatic to announce that I am back with the @Steelers !There is no place like #SteelerNation #EverydayIsABlessing— Trai Essex (@TraiDay79) April 12, 2012

Essex, as I pointed out recently in another post, has dropped a considerable amount of weight and is looking very fit. He figures to offer depth on the interior line heading into training camp and can also play tackle in a pinch if needed. Essex even played center last year against the St. Louis Rams after Doug Legursky went down with a shoulder injury early in the game.
Essex was originally drafted by the Steelers in the 3rd round of the 2005 draft. He was an unrestricted free agent last season and was signed back to the roster after being told to drop some weight. He played just over 325 snaps on offense for the Steelers in 2012 and it included snaps at all 5 spots on the offensive line.
The Steelers have now re-signed two of their own unrestricted free agents in as many days as it was announced on Wednesday that wide receiver Jerricho Cotchery had agreed to return to Pittsburgh on a two year deal worth $3 million.
It looks like the Steelers are moving forward, regardless of the Wallace situation. Dave, do you have any updated info on the Steelers salary cap situation, based on the teams recent FA signings? It would seem that they have burned through some of the money needed to sign Wallace to a deal this season.
Great news! (Maybe he’ll actually need to ADD weight this offseason?!) OL is my biggest concern, and Essex will at least add some depth, experience and versatility. I still hope they draft at least 2 or even 3 offensive lineman later this month!
I’d really like to see them move on from Jonathan Scott soon and get that money to someone useful who is either on the roster or not.
Will update soon, but likely only used up around $1.5 million of space at most with all three signings after displacement.
Better be MUSCLE and not FAT. Muscle weighs more so it shouldn’t be terribly hard to accomplish.
Good to know. Thanks!
That’s surprising figured they would go with starks before Trai but depth is good……
He looks like he only weighs like 250…… They wanted him to lose weight but do u think he will have to put some more weight on now?
I think they will cut ties with Scott in Preseason or make him take pay cut all the way down to vet. min. I think they should release him all together……. As well as will allen
I don’t think they will need to draft 3….. I can see 2 because we got all of our OL back except Starks and Kemoutea and Colon will be back so I hope to see 2 drafted maybe grab up another Undrafted one…… But they could bring back starks if need be…. So they should get a Guard and Tackle and main focus be on Nt and Cb in my opinion…..
regarding the signing: As my dietitian/nurse told me repeatedly: “thin is in”. Good move, Essex.
