Report: Ravens LB Terrell Suggs Suffers Torn Achilles Playing Basketball

Baltimore Ravens linebacker Terrell Suggs reportedly tore his Achilles’ tendon playing basketball in Arizona earlier this week. The injury will likely force him to miss the entire 2012 NFL season following surgery. Adam Schefter reports that Suggs thinks he could be back in October, per a source. Suggs had a career-high 14 sacks to go along with 70 tackles and 7 forced fumbles in 2011 to earn defensive player of the year honors.

The Ravens said in a statement, “We are in contact with Terrell. He will see a specialist early next week, and we’ll know more at that time.” Baltimore general manager Ozzie Newsome told ESPN’s Josina Anderson that the team learned of the injury earlier this week. “We found out about it on Monday,” Newsome said.

With Suggs now out a considerable amount of time, Pernell McPheecould see a more in his snaps in his place. McPhee produced 23 tackles asnd six sacks for the Ravens last season in limited action. The Ravens also drafted Alabama linebacker Courtney Upshaw with the third pick in the second round. Upshaw played Suggs\’ spot on defense at Alabama and had 9 1/2 sacks and 52 tackles in his senior season with the Crimson Tide.

I am, I'm me. 40 something, retired and a life long Steelers fan.

    Good news for Big Ben!

Sad day for Ratbird fans. Couldn’t have happened to a better fan base…

  • Clintmartin

Sounds like a dream come true !!! Lol !!! He will be out but will not be missed !!!

  • Intropy

I always respected Suggs. He’s a great athlete, a good competitor, and he treated the rivalry the way it should be – as a rivalry between two teams who “hate” each other on field but have nothing but respect for each other off the field.

  • Gevins

That sucks. I want to beat the Ravens at full strength.

  • Eric87

Well the loss of Suggs and with Jarrett Johnson gone, the Ravens pass rush should be severely hurting. Though none should celebrate his injury as bad luck can swing back our way. Superstitious.

  • Huskie

I’ve got to agree with this. You never want to hear about an athlete being injured and by all accounts Suggs is a total professional. Wish him well in his recovery. I want the Steelers to win, but not because our opponents aren’t at full strength.

  • Jabsosteel

Come on, Intropy, lighten up…the guy didn’t DIE for Pete sake. They’d be piling on if the roles were reversed….

Jabsosteel -The goal should not be to be just like the Ravens and/or their fans… The goal should be to show the class that is reflecive of a great Steeler organization and an equally classy Steeler Nation… Sugg’s drives me nuts from his too often successful play against us and his annoying smile… no worse than Hine’s was for them… but Terrell Suggs the man and Terrell Suggs the player deserve a classy response from us. I wish him the best in his recovery on all fronts and I wouldn’t be too quick to dismiss the ability of the players behind him.
