Steelers Released K Grant Ressel After Rookie Camp

The Pittsburgh Steelers released kicker Grant Ressel on Monday following the weekend rookie camp. Ressel had been signed as an undrafted free agent out of Missouri following the draft. The Steelers will certainly fill the roster spot with a kicker by next week as the first team OTA session gets under way.

Veteran kicker Dave Rayner was brought in for a visit this past week and the Steelers also had put in a claim for kicker Jake Rogers following him being waived by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Dallas Cowboys were awarded the waiver claim on Rogers instead.

Incumbent Shaun Suisham is entering his second full season with the team after being signed by the Steelers in the second half the 2010 season to replace Jeff Reed. Suisham has connected on 37 of 46 field goals since joining the black and gold.

I can’t believe they actually signed him to a 4 yr. deal….. I sure hope we can get a better kicker to replace Suisham……. We need a clutch kicker we can count on when we need that FG…..

His mom was still making phone calls to relatives and friends about his good fortune. Ouch.

If you go to NFLcom and sort kicker stats by FG percentage – Suisham is #34 on the list. Guess who is #35? – Dave Rayner!

Geez….I hope we can find a diamond in the rough off the waiver wire or another undrafted free agent.

Once I saw we were looking for a K I already knew something didnt pan out w/ Ressel…I said this a while ago in a draft blog I chat on quite a bit.
