Plaxico Burress Helps Mike Tomlin Out With His Football Camp

This is how rumors get started.

Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin held his All-Star Football camp on Friday and Saturday at Christopher Newport University, located in Newport News, Virginia. Tomlin is of course from that area and Tomlin is a very active supporter of the Hampton Roads Youth Foundation in addition.

Several NFL players who hail from the area also helped Tomlin out with his camp and that included former Steelers wide receiver Plaxico Burress, who flew up from his home in South Florida to help out. The Steelers of course looked into signing Burress last offseason, following his release from prison, but he instead ended up signing with the New York Jets. Burress is currently now a free agent once again following his one season in New York.

Although many will try to read into Burress helping Tomlin out, I wouldn\’t. Barring injury or a lengthy Mike Wallace holdout, the Steelers are set at the wide receiver position. The Steelers also do not have the cap room to afford much more than a one-year deal veteran minimum deal for Burress.

All of that said, you can watch a few interviews done with both Tomlin and Burress below.

Youth important to Tomlin:

  • The way things are looking now a one year vertern minimum may be all Plax can get. As my dad always says, ‘Some money is better than no money’. I’m sure if push comes to shove, he’d sign that deal. I’d love to have him as the 5th WR. A receiving corps of Wallace, Brown, Sanders, Cotchery, and Burress sounds unreal right now. Imagine going 5 wide, who is going to cover Burress? A safety, linebacker? Mis-match heaven. Plus he can help in the redzone too with his height. I say sign him to a one year deal for the min. and see how it goes. That way if he is productive and we can’t sign wallace next year we’ll at least have a stop-gap until we can find another WR to take his place.

  • Sign Him Up! It couldn’t Hurt anything.

  • I wish we could sign Plax. If he has something to prove then maybe he could be the Plax of old like the Niners claim Moss is doing.
