The Terrible Podcast – Talking Tomlin Extension & Training Camp Preview Episode

Steelers PodcastSeason 2, Episode 128 of The Terrible Podcast is up and co-host David Todd and I start off the show by talking about the new contract extension that Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin received on the eve of the team reporting to Latrobe for training camp.

After discussing the Steelers signing of first round draft pick David DeCastro, that took place on Monday, we quickly discuss the latest addition to the 90 man roster, offensive lineman Bridger Buche.

In the second part of the show David and I have a look at what I deem the 9 best training camp battles that will take place over the next several weeks and discuss each in great detail. We differ in opinion on a few of course and state our cases in regard to several players.

We finish up the show by focusing in on a few young players that might have an outside shot at the roster, and at the very least, a shot at making the practice squad.

You may think that Baron Batch is a lock, but sooner or later Mendenhall will be back and then someone else will have to go.

The stated expectation that Curtis Brown will not challenge for a starting outside corner position is fair.

But I am failing to understand why Brown would see time in the “Big Nickel”. If Brown isn’t capable of beating out Keenan Lewis or Cortez Allen in your estimation, than why should anyone expect to see him inserted into a formation that calls for three safeties and two cornerbacks?

According to your presumed cornerback pecking order, Brown likely would only see time in the “Dime” and “Quarter” sub-packages as even the regular “Nickel” package would exclude Brown’s position on the depth chart(fourth).
