Steelers Injury Report: Mendenhall Ruled Out, Redman Questionable, Pouncey Probable

The Pittsburgh Steelers wrapped up practice preparations on Friday for the Sunday game at Heinz Field against the Washington Redskins and the final injury report for the Week 8 game is now out.

As expected, safety Troy Polamalu (calf) and tackle Marcus Gilbert (ankle) have been ruled out for the game. Head coach Mike Tomlin had announced on Tuesday during his press conference that neither would be ready this week.

Also ruled out on Friday were running back Rashard Mendenhall (Achilles) and linebacker Brandon Johnson (hamstring). Mendenhall was unable to practice all week and will miss his second consecutive game as a result. Johnson was able to practice Wednesday on a limited basis, but Friday makes two straight practices that he was unable to do work.

Running back Isaac Redman (ankle) was able to work again on Friday after also being limited on Thursday and he is listed as questionable on the Friday injury report. He is holding out hope that Tomlin will allow him to play. Jonathan Dwyer is expected to start at running back regardless if Redman dresses for the game.

Center Maurkice Pouncey (knee), safety Will Allen (ankle), linebacker Adrian Robinson (concussion), linebacker Chris Carter (hamstring), and kicker Shaun Suisham (ankle) were all able to work again on Friday and all are listed as probable. Both Pouncey and Carter had sat out the game Sunday night because of their injuries, but both should now be ready to go Sunday against the Redskins.

Linebacker Jason Worilds (illness) will also play Sunday night.

I had all along been thinking (I agree) those points vabarzey wrote. During this past offseason it appeared Steelers will not sign Mendy for next year, then Mendy’s being injured this season will not help that.

But that was before Redman had this down year, Redman turned out to be as slow as staff had alluded to long ago, & Barron Batch isnt producing as well as Batch is at blocking, tho I’m a fan of Redman & BBatch. Not sayin that’s enough to re-sign Mendy, just it’s no-longer an automatic that the staff won’t re-sign Mendy.

Much of our run problems this year were due to awful blocking for the 5 games prior to Cincinnati. If our run blocking continues to improve (& we dont know yet if Cincy game was a fluke of improvement), then by end of this season we’ll find out which 1 or 2 of the Redman/Mendy/Dwyer trio will be good starter at HB for next season. Will need 1 or 2 of those 3 to become good solid starter because: BBatch’s build & skills says limited to being a 3rd down back, Rainey will get killed if use him as anything more than gadget plays & special team returner (yeah did a great run up the middle last game but count on that & he’ll get knocked out), & I dont want us to hav to use any of our 1st 5 draft rounds next year on a RB because we have desparat needs on defense (need high picks for: an OLB, 2 safeties, at-least 1 DE, & a NT to groom behind McClendon).

That’s a good question about Ryan Mundy: How the heck has that bum never been injured. Maybe a player who whiffs most of the plays is not as likely to get injured, I dunno.
