Jaguars Sign WR Toney Clemons Off Of Steelers Practice Squad

The Pittsburgh Steelers have one less wide receiver on their practice squad right now as the Jacksonville Jaguars signed Toney Clemons to their 53 man roster today.

Clemons was drafted by the Steelers as their first of four seventh-round picks (231st overall) of the 2012 NFL Draft out of Colorado.

The rookie registered just one catch for 14 yards during the preseason for the Steelers in limited action after having a hard time catching the ball during training camp.

The Steelers will now have to fill the roster spot created by the loss of Clemons on Tuesday and it very well could be guard Ryan Lee that gets brought back.

The Steelers still have wide receiver Derrick Moye on the practice squad currently and David Gilreath also figures to land back on the practice squad once Antonio Brown and Jerricho Cotchery get healthy.

About Dave Bryan

I am, I'm me. 40 something, retired and a life long Steelers fan.
  • Kevin Gobleck

Dangit I was hoping he would turn into a great Wide out for us one day

  • Douglas Andrews

Maybe we can fill his spot with Jerrod Johnson. I still think we missed one on this guy! Clemons can’t catch reminds me alot of Limas Sweed hope i’m wrong

  • NW86

Yes, a lot of us were, but I think the fact that even with the recent injuries, the Steelers activated Gilreath and then went and signed Plaxico off the street over Clemons, means that they haven’t seen too much from Clemons this year. Time to take another stab at a tall playmaker in the 2013 draft, hopefully in an earlier round.

Not bad timing to get another OL body on the practice squad.

  • steeltown

Good, A.Brown will be back soon anyway, plus hopefully now they bring back OL
    Ryan Lee

Dave, I hope you’re right about resigning Ryan Lee to the practice squad! I hated the news about him being released. I thought he should of made the 53 man roster over Beachum who never showed anything!!

  • steeltown

Clemons did not have a good training camp or preseason

  • John A Stewart

HERE WE GO AGAIN THEY NEVER GIVE THEIR YOUNG PLAYERS A CHANCE THIS KID WAS GOOD AT COLORADO LOL. AKA JERROD JOHNSON; DENNIS DIXON TONY HILLS JOE BURNETT MARSHELL MCFADDEN WHAT’S GOING ON. AND YOU KEEP BATCH AND LEFTWICH OH I FORGOT THE STANDARD IS THE STANDARD I TIP MY HAT TO YOU COACH TOMLIN.

  • Chris S

    SMH @ some people

  • SteelSpine

He had good size-speed ratio but really stunk in preseason. He was a player me & many of us pulled for (for alotta reasons), but he really disappointed in preseason.

  • SteelSpine

    Yep.

  • SteelSpine

I agree on both JJohnson & Clemons – & I too hope I’m wrong on Clemons. In preseason having kept the known-brittle Leftwich insteda JJ, that will be question from me & others about who on Steelers staff judged that in preseason. I’ve seen Steelers throughout the decades keep as 3rd QBs, rookies who where not as good prospects as JJ. JJ must have had a conflict with some coach on Steelers that we dont know about.

  • Douglas Andrews

Would have to be something like that cause he had first round talent before he was hurt in college. He showed me more than Dennis Dixon and look how long the Steelers kept him
