Steelers Sign T Joe Long & G Justin Cheadle To Practice Squad

The Pittsburgh Steelers had two open spots on their practice squad after promoting guard John Malecki to the 53 man roster on Monday and losing wide receiver Toney Clemons to the Jacksonville Jaguars. On Wednesday they filled those two spots with offensive linemen as Bob Labriola reports they have signed tackle Joe Long and guard Justin Cheadle to the practice squad.

Long is the younger brother of Miami Dolphins Pro Bowl offensive tackle Jake Long. Long was a four-year starter at Wayne State at left tackle making a school record 49 consecutive starts and originally signed by the St. Louis Rams as an undrafted free agent. He measured in at his Pro Day at 6056 and weighed 308.

Cheadle is a 6030 guard out of Cal who has spent time with the Kansas City Chiefs and most recently the Green Bay Packers after going undrafted.

J.Long could have some upside, nowhere near the athlete that his brother is, but he can play Tackle or Guard and can also long snap. He won the Gene Upshaw Award as best lineman in NCAA Division II. First team
Division II all-American. First team all-conference and was a Team captain

For a second I thought the title said Jake Long. I was getting ecstatic.

  • Tanner

Is this a sign to try and get jake long at the end of this year?

  • steeltown

Cheadle seems like just another camp body, but who knows.. Long could end up being a good signing, guess we’ll see

  • GunsDontKillWoodleyKills

I hope you aren’t seriously thinking that.

  • James

Not unless Jake long wants to play for Max Starks money! #dreamland

  • James

Not going to get my hopes up. He seems a bit undersized to me?
Will see what potential he shows on the PS and if he can develop into a potential backup tackle in the next year or 2.
A shame that Lee was signed by the Saints

  • SG

    Don Cheadle’s brother?

  • steeltown

Definitely a shame, Lee was my favorite PS player. I think Long is a bit undersized as well, he has position flexibility though. He would probably serve better as a guard. It’s pretty crazy how many potential OG’s we have (Decastro, Legursky, Malecki, Foster, Cheadle) even Beachum projects as more of an interior linemen. The only true Tackles we have are Gilbert, Adams and Starks /with Foster & Colon as emergency guys

Steelers used to get an ocassional gem from the street & late in draft. But the last one James Harrison that was so many years ago. Instead we’ve been grooming too much crap. Has the cause of that been the rest of the league got smarter, or our GM slipping for resting riding reputations of got into super bowls I dont know which has been the cause.

  • SteelerDave

I agree but would say that Foster is a true RT who is merely playing RG (and doing a solid job of it) because of injuries. Loosing Lee is a big blow as I felt he could have matured into a great LG.

  • steeltown

Foster went undrafted and has been a great player for us, he’s stayed healthy over the last few yrs and has played RT, LG and RG in a pinch, lets not forget P Drew Butler who wouldve beat out Kapinos even if he was healthy. Butler should be our Punter for yrs to come

  • steeltown

Also, its far too early to tell, but OLB Robinson and DB Golden could both turn out to be good players in the near future

  • Thomas Rancy

Man you gotta be kidding me, you release Ryan Lee and now we’re picking up guards off the street, come on…

  • steeltown

If I remember correctly, the Steelers were interested in Long before. I think they attended his Pro Day

  • steeltown

Agreed. Foster is the best RT we have with Adams and Gilbert out. Foster is a dam solid player, I hope they sign him long term

  • Agree with SteelerDave…But I am not quite ready to give up on Beachum filling in at RT yet. Especially if they give him a little help out there. They did keep him on the 53.

Ok & I figured there’d be ok names or prospects I hadnt thought of. Im referring to good players Steelers had a reputation for finding as free agents or with late picks:
    Ryan Clark
    Greg Lloyd
    Kevin Green
    Joey Porter
    Jeff Hastings
& many more who had more impact than who u listed.

Now we’ve been grooming Mundy, Chris Carter, & too many other bums across the board.

  • steeltown

I agree Mundy doesnt seem capable, I havent seen enough of Carter.

  • steeltown

Dont forget Keisel was a 7th Rd pick and Antonio Brown was a 6th Rder,, Dwyer could also turn into a solid player

    James Harrison? Willie Parker?

  • Good to see the Pittsburgh Steelers making moves. After reviewing their roster, it’s hard to believe that so many football players get injured every week.
