Pittsburgh Steelers tight end Heath Miller dropped by to visit team on Wednesday and it was reported that he would have surgery on Thursday to repair the damage done to his ACL, MCL and PCL late in the loss to the Cincinnati Bengals this past Sunday.
Miller, who was placed on injured reserve on Wednesday, caught 71 passes this season for 816 yards and 8 touchdowns. He moved the chains 44 times with receptions and his yardage and touchdown totals were career highs for him. Miller needed just 6 more catches to set a new career high in receptions.
The Steelers tight end faces a long rehab following his surgery and he undoubtedly will miss the offseason mini camps and OTA sessions as a result. It is hoped that Miller will be ready to go by the time the 2013 regular season starts and it would not be surprising to see him start training camp off on the PUP list.
The Steelers signed free agent tight end Jamie McCoy on Wednesday to replace Miller on the 53 man roster and he will back up David Paulson and Leonard Pope on Sunday against the Cleveland Browns.
