The Terrible Podcast – Talking Tomlin Presser, O-Line, Mendenhall & Joe Reedy Interview Episode

Steelers Podcast

Season 3, Episode 57 of The Terrible Podcast is up and co-host David Todd and I get right into talking about the Tuesday press conference of Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin as it relates to injuries, Rashard Mendenhall, Ben Roethlisberger, Todd Haley and who might start at right tackle. This actually turns into pretty good back in forth banter.

We discuss the play of the Steelers offensive line in the game against the Dallas Cowboys this past Sunday and how rookie David DeCastro played in his first regular season action.

It is Wednesday so that means we start previewing the upcoming game Sunday against the Cincinnati Bengals so we have Joe Reedy from the Cincinnati Enquirer back on the show to give us his insight heading into the game from the Bengals perspective. We talk offense, defense, Andy Dalton, Rey Maualuga, Andre Smith, Kevin Zeitler, and much more with Joe, who you can follow on Twitter at @JoeReedy and read his work online at http://news.cincinnati.com/apps/pbcs.dll/section?Category=SPT02. We get Joe to give us his midweek prediction on the game before letting him go.

Quite a few more talking points are included that I have failed to include ion this recap.

I think Mendenhall is possibly done as a Steeler and from his comments, it doesn’t seem like he wants to come back. It says something when you as the feature back, drafted in the 1st round, end up the 3rd back. It reflects the disappointment from the coaches in his performance and attitude.

Mendenhall needs a good O line to give him a clear hole so he doesn’t have to dance and hesitate. He’s no Barry Sanders but he has great outside speed and if he gets open he’s gone. The better backs who can run inside are Dwyer and Redman. But with all the injuries along the O line, the current line needs to try and find its chemistry to dominate the line of scrimmage and give these backs holes to run through.

Mendenhall is an enigma..both mentally and physically. He’s had seasons where he was very productive, yet he seems to not be able to run between the Tackles anymore. To be a starting RB in this League, you do need to be able run up the middle and bounce outside if needed. He is capable of catching balls out of the backfield, which I hope they utilize this week
