Report: Steelers To Meet With Texas S Kenny Vaccaro At NFL Combine

The defensive backs are getting their time with media Sunday at the NFL combine and Jim Wexell of Steel City Insider reports via Twitter that Texas safety Kenny Vaccaro is scheduled to have a formal interview tonight with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

This news is not surprising at all as the Steelers seem certain to draft a safety that can play both inside the box and deep at some point during the draft in April.

Vaccaro can play both the run and the pass effectively and is forecasted by many to be drafted in the first round after a successful college career.

The Steelers need to start grooming long-term at the safety position with both Troy Polamalu and Ryan Clark winding down their careers. Clark is currently in the final year of his current contract while Polamalu is signed through the 2014 season.

The defensive backs will not be on the field in Indianapolis until Tuesday. The Steelers are permitted to interview 60 players at the combine for 15 minutes each.

    Like Elam a lot better.

  • zyzak

    They need offense.

  • Jason White

    You and me both.

  • Nolrog

That’s the thing about this draft. Some like Vacarro, some like Elam, some like others. There’s not one safety that’s head and shoulders above the rest.

  • Phil Heidenreich

No need for a safety in the coming future?? Troy is in for half the year and Clark’s getting up there and has concussion issues. I wouldn’t mind offense depending on who’s there, but as a blanket statement it’s foolish.

  • Phil Heidenreich

Agreed, I haven’t heard anyone saying there’s really a top safety, but it also doesn’t seem as weak as last year’s class.

  • He’s not worth the 17th pick.

  • StarSpangledSteeler

Agreed. It’s about value. This particular draft it looks like we can get almost as good a Safety in the 2nd or 3rd round IMO.

This is one of those years a “trade down scenario” would really be helpful.

  • Shannon Stephenson

Trade down would be fine but we can get a good quality S in the 4th this year IMO.

  • Cody Younkin

If you get Vaccaro in the first and Ray Ray Armstrong in the 7th/FA then we just secured the future of the saftey tandem for 10+ yrs (barring injury)

  • zyzak

Steelers should trade down, but I think a lot of teams will try. Not a lot of value in first rd.@ 17

Good player.. but not worth 17th overall, maybe in the 20’s

Not going to lie though.. we really need replacements at either Safety position.. what happens if Troy misses 6-8games this season..and Clark is on the final year of his contract.

Golden could end up being a solid player, but we need talent at one of the Safety positions, true playmaking talent
