Report: Steelers To Re-sign WR Plaxico Burress Soon

According to Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports on Twitter, the Pittsburgh Steelers are planning to re-sign wide receiver Plaxico Burress to a one-year veteran contract for the minimum in the coming days.

Burress, who was signed late last season after wide receivers Antonio Brown and Jerricho Cotchery went down with injures, registered 3 catches for 42 yards and a touchdown in limited playing time.

The minimum deal might very well wind up being a qualifying contract that would come with a reduced cap charge.

The Steelers will lose unrestricted free agent Mike Wallace to free agency by the end of the day on Tuesday and Burress will help add depth to the roster. Burress has long been a close friend of quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, who more than likely pushed for his re-signing.

Why not, it can’t hurt. They can always draft a WR late in draft

  • steeltown

    That’s cool… he’ll be cheap

  • Cody Younkin

I Don’t have a problem with this, I just dont know what good it will do unless we actually target people other than Miller and Brown..

  • Jollyrob68

I’m surprised because they wasted him last year by having him inactive. They also wasted Jericho last year. They had veteran Wr then use them. Ben needs to stepup his game.

  • Kyle Owens

I was under the impression that the No.3 or 4 WR is suppose to be able to contribute on special teams in some for or fashion.

  • William Harris

At least he knows he’s gonna come to camp, compete, and be on the roster. Now he can focus on conditioning-why he admitted he wasn’t on the field enough last year.

A little surprised given his age but he can serve a niche role like in the red zone.
Maybe Heath Millers health had something to do with this signing. I doubt Heath will be recovered fully by September.

sure, he is cheap, but this doesn’t help or hurt this team. they still need another play maker at wide receiver. I still hope they draft one in the first three rounds.

We now have two WRs who don’t start and don’t play ST. I do however, like Plax wonder if something will happen to JC now?

  • Mikey Hoje

my prediction for Plax, 30 catches all year, 12 yard average, am I warm?

  • StarSpangledSteeler

It’s a good signing. Burress is a red zone threat. Plus if Brown or Sanders gets hurt he also provides veteran depth.

What are our current options when we reach the red zone?

Brown? Sanders? Paulsen? If Plax gets two red zone passes per game and comes down with one of them, that’s 8 TDs next year. That’s well worth the vet minimum.

  • LucasY59

the young CB’s are good ST guys so they can afford to have the two older WR’s if Plax get 2-3 catches a game and at least 3-4 TDs this season he is worth it (for the minimum contract) IMO

the contract is probably not guarateed so it may be a Training camp competition and whichever older WR looks better make the team and the other is gone

I am surprised….but not necessarily disappointed. He should be a good red zone target. It fills a need …..cheaply, which is good.
