Steelers Free Agent S Will Allen To Visit Cowboys On Monday

Calvin Watkins of ESPN Dallas reports on Sunday that the Dallas Cowboys will host Pittsburgh Steelers free agent safety Will Allen on Monday for a visit.

Allen started seven games for the Steelers in 2012 while starter Troy Polamalu was sidelined with his calf injury. In just over 430 snaps played on defense, Allen registered 34 total tackles, 3 defensed passes and forced one fumble.

Allen has spent the last three seasons in Pittsburgh after playing the first six with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He will turn 31 later in the offseason and has built a reputation as being a strong special teams contributor over the course of his career.

Damn…. I think we need Allen for one more season, atleast till Golden and an eventual draft pick are up to speed

  • Lamarr56

Is he tagged at all, we will need him bad.

  • Tom

Need to get this guy signed. He did a nice job filling in for the oft injured guy with the 32 inch, well conditioned, beautiful hair.

  • I am interested to see what Ventrose can do with special teams. I think he is an undersized safety that makes some plays. The Patriots bounced him on and off their squad for a while.

  • …I meant Ventrone?

  • Reg Sayhitodabadguy Hunt

Damn I like will Allen an they should have been. having him back up instead of mundy if he goes do we at least get a comp pick for him if not we really need to try an keep him

  • dgh57

I think if they were going to resign Allen they would of done so by now. If he does indeed leave then it makes me think all the more they’ll be drafting a Safety early in this upcoming draft.

  • StarSpangledSteeler

This actually helps us. I think the drop off between Will Allen and Cromartie-Smith is minimal. Let Allen go. Save some money. Gain a comp pick.

We don’t have that many spots open this year. Troy and Ryan. Golden and Cromartie-Smith and a high draft pick.

  • Jonathon Bert Schade

If Cromartie is good enough to replace Allen why hasn’t he seen the field? Golden, maybe, bu they need Allen this year.

  • Shannon Stephenson

It seems the Steelers are waiting to sign players for league minimums because of cap problems…so even though they may want Allen thye wont get him till they figure he has no other options.

  • GunsDontKillWoodleyKills

I hope Allen is resigned. If not, atleast Mundy is gone.

  • Michael Mazanowski

I totally agree! We def need to address the saftey pos during the draft.

  • Michael Mazanowski

No tag — he is an UFA.

  • alex

yup, after Mundy flopped in that position again, Allen held it down…

  • Michael Mazanowski

Kenny V first round baby! If he is there at 17 we have to draft him!

  • Michael Mazanowski

    Not Kenny G!

  • Michael Mazanowski

    and a backup!

Allen is solid. I noticed no drop off when he was in there for Polamalu. Allen is very underrated. If we lose him now we have suspect depth at corner AND safety. One injury to our starters and we’re toast. Say hello to Willie Gay on the outside or that hyped Golden who I only know exists because Steelers fans or reporters talk about him like he’s the next Darren Perry. Maybe he is, I don’t know. All I know is Polamalu better have an awesome year, or he’s out the door in 2014. Guys like him and Woodley are killing us by not performing like Steelers thought they would. We have to move on at some point. And getting Kenny V would be nice, but what about WR? We need a #1 starter badly let alone additional depth. A. Brown and Sanders are too small and not quite fast enough to be a huge impact. Lets hope C. Patterson falls to us. I like Ryan Swope in 2nd or 3rd round if we don’t get CP. Swope is 6′, 210 and runs a 4.34 which would make him our fastest receiver and second largest (Burress). A. Brown by the way is 5′ 10″, 190 lbs and runs a 4.5 40. And Swope was a top performer the past two years in the SEC. His numbers at the combine were comparable to Mike Wallace’s.

  • StarSpangledSteeler

Are you kidding me? Kenny V ran a 4.63 forty at the combine. And his change of direction is even worse. How is he going to cover NFL receivers?

    PS – Jason Worilds ran a 4.49

  • StarSpangledSteeler

If Keenan Lewis was better than Willie Gay why didn’t he see the field?

  • Maurice_hill_district

Seems all that way to me too. Cheapie FAs paraded thru, & even they didnt accept the minimum.

Cowboys hav even less cap room than Steelers, until Cowboys re-up Romo. But then Will Allen can meet with teams which do have cap space to pay Will the money he is worth. Im not liking it.

  • Maurice_hill_district

You’re being sarcastic right? How else could you say the dropoff is minimal from any decent or average player to Cromartie-Smith who has done nothing. C-S has done zilch.

  • Maurice_hill_district

Yep. I hope the Steelers FO knows what they are doing in this one! Polo/Clark to b injured again, no rookie gonna play safety gir LeBeau. & Golden hasnt yet justified any of the hype so I dont see him or Crom-Smith playing S for LeBeau til 2014.

  • zipposteelers

To even expect Troy to be healthy all season is hopeful thinking. They will need all the help they can get in the secondary..letting allen go is a very bad move.

  • LucasY59

I agree on the comp pick, even though Allen played well this year he is like Troy and Clark and will be done after a year or two (it they did re-sign him) so they may as well get a chance to get an extra pick next year. There is no room with the cap so he won’t be back even if he doesnt sign with another team (unless there is an injury in camp)

not sure about Cromartie-Smith he should be good on special teams, hope he doesnt need to have any defensive snaps. Golden has potential. plus there will most likely be at least one S picked up in the draft. so again no room to sign Allen back

  • Michael Mazanowski

I agree that Vaccaro didn’t test that well at the NFL Scouting Combine, but he is outstanding on tape.

Interesting analysis StarSpangledSteeler because the experts are saying that he has very loose hips and good overall change-of-direction ability. Locks onto slot receivers at the line and has the agility and straight-game speed to stay with them on out routes and downfield. Physical with receivers trying to block him in the run game, has the strength to rip off and make a stop. Solid open-field tackler, uses great effort and his upper-body strength to drag down ball carriers. Good change of direction ability and shows the range to play the half-field in Cover Two. Attacks downhill against the run well, running the alley aggressively from deep-half coverage.

Here’s hoping he doesn’t get much of an offer…I’ve felt all along that Allen is a guy that could be back at league minimum if he doesn’t get a better offer elsewhere. Of course, he is holding out hope of something better and wouldn’t sign a league minimum deal until after the draft. And if the Steelers end up with a 1st-2nd round safety, then he might still not be back. But I’d rather have him still available so they can keep their options more open in the draft.

  • steeltown

DCSmith is an enigma… I have always liked him and hoped he’d turn the corner, but im not holding my breath. I wouldnt go as far as saying he’s as good as Will Allen, theres something not right, he’s been released and re-signed too many times.
Maybe its the mental aspect of the game

  • steeltown

That still remains to be seen, I think Lewis most likely will be better than Gay when its all said and done, but what if he doesnt succeed outside the Steelers system… it wouldnt be the first time

  • James

The cowboys can’t sign anybody as they only have about $100k in cap space!
