Steelers Free Agent Safety Ryan Mundy To Visit With Giants

Pittsburgh Steelers unrestricted free agent safety Ryan Mundy has a visit scheduled with the New York Giants, according to Ralph Vacchiano of the New York Daily News on Twitter.

Mundy played nearly 300 snaps on defense for the Steelers last season at both the strong and free safety positions due to starter Troy Polamalu being sidelined by a calf injury for the first half of the season.

Mundy did not have a good showing as a starter in the Steelers first three games and he was eventually benched in favor of veteran safety Will Allen. Mundy did, however, dress for every game and played on special teams.

The Woodland Hills graduate recorded 39 career tackles last season and 2 defensed passes. He also allowed 3 receiving touchdowns in the Steelers first four games.

  • Kevin Gobleck

So this would give us a total of three comp. picks next year right?

  • Fu-Schnickens

    Ryan who????

  • untitled

Depends on the deal he signs and how much he plays next year but it could be 4 if Keenan goes.

  • Kevin Gobleck

I’d rather have 3 and keep Keenan:)

  • steeltown

Please go.. please go.. W.Allen showed just how expendable you really are Ryan

  • steeltown

Yea I would think, if they pay him a nice contract and he plays enough snaps, which could happen, NY is seeking some experience at Safety with Kenny Phillips leaving they’ll need someone next to Antrel Rolle

  • untitled

    I hear ya there

  • steeltown

    I second that

I’ll say this though.. If they dont retain K.Lewis.. I sure hope they use the extra cap money to extend a player like McLendon and maybe Dwyer or Sanders

  • Shannon Stephenson

I will give the Giants 1M to sign him…just dont let him be a Steeler anymore.

  • hergieburbur

I don’t think there is much risk of that.

  • hergieburbur

Nobody is paying him over vet minimum.

  • SteelSpine

Now that’s a Steeler fan goin the extra length.

  • SteelSpine

Some team out there better keep him tho because regarding this player I don’t trust the Steeler brass. Watch some team cut Mundy in preseason (when they see how easy runners juke him) then Steelers will sign him for cheap. Why do I fear Steelers will do that? Because he’ll be “cheap”, notice now Steelers are interviewing (or “reportedly interested in”) any FA washups or bums who are CHEAP. Mundy will be without a job in preseason somehow, then Steelers will bring him back for the exact same whatever reasons they had kept Mundy after years of watching #29 chase people into endzones on STs, mainly “because he knows our defense & is smart”. That’s why on defense he was often in position before then getting juked easily.

I wouldnt count on Mundy earning a comp pick, he’ll have a hard time earning a roster spot.

They could still get 4 (or more) comp picks and keep Lewis.

Starks, Legursky, Hampton and Will Allen (should get signed somewhere else before mundy) could be signed by another team

  • Reg Sayhitodabadguy Hunt

If we dont keep lewis which corner should we pick up free agency or draft

  • Ahmad

He wasn’t as bad as Tyrone Carter but please get him out of Pittsburgh.

  • walter mason

Mundy was a 6th round draft pick so we will get a low rounder if anything. Legursky was undrafted so we get nothing there. Will Allen was not drafted by the Steelers so nothing for him either.

  • JohnnyV1

Goodbye Ryan, good luck and thanks for losing the Denver playoff game for us!

  • steeltown

If Lewis goes elsewhere they will get another CB via the draft, we have Ike and Cortez as the starters and Gay is a good nickel guy, then thrown in C.Brown and Van Dyke and a draft pick, it’ll be good competition.

Still though, locking up Lewis will go along way for the future, especially since Ike is nearing the end

  • John Hinton

I hope last season was the last time we see Mundy in the black and gold – he was horrible – right up there with Tyrone Carter.

  • LucasY59

Comp picks are for Unrestricted FA’s. The pick is determined on the the contract the new team gives the player and that players performance / playing time with the new team.

Restricted FA’s if signed by another team give the original team the new teams draft pick in whatever round the original team tendered that player.

Mundy, Legursky, and Allen can earn Comp picks because they are UFA’s the picks wont be given until the 2014 draft

Looks like the Steelers could hopefully get two 3rd rd picks for Wallace and Lewis, as well as later picks for Mendenhall (5th?) and Mundy (7th?) since they have all signed with other teams
