Steelers Free Agent T Max Starks Earned Performance-based Pay Benefit For 2012

Pittsburgh Steelers left tackle Max Starks was the only offensive player to play ever snap in 2012 and he picked up a nice little bonus for his efforts.

Brian McIntyre of Yahoo Sports reported on Wednesday that Starks earned $272,590 in the NFL\’s 2012 performance-based pay program for accomplishing that.

The performance-based pay benefit program was started by the league and the players union as part of the 2002 extension to the CBA. It was, however, suspended for the 2010 and \’11 seasons because of the expiration of the CBA and subsequent lockout.

In 2012, each team was allocated around $3.46 million and the payouts to not count against the salary cap as it is a benefit similar to health insurance or a 401k.

Starks was an unrestricted free agent last off-season and re-signed late as he was rehabbing from the knee injury that suffered in the 2011 playoffs. He played well at left tackle, but is now once again an unrestricted free agent this off-season.

Starks said after the 2012 season ended that he was hoping to return to the Steelers in 2013, but made it known that he is not interested in being a backup.

Good for Max… Love this guy

  • John Hinton

Well-deserved…hopefully the rest of our OL will play every snap in 2013.

  • I hope nobody signs him and he gives the depth idea another thought. I would feel a lot better knowing he is on the bench ready to go. He has been playing for back up money anyway for a left tackle.

  • JohnnyV1

Good for Max! He seems like a good dude, and certainly earned it starting all year long coming off a late-season knee injury.

I cant agree more… at this point, we’re not even sure which guy is playing LT this year, even if its as a back up to Mike Adams I wish Max would retire a Steeler

  • CW

Good for Max. Who knows, if no one signs him and Gilbert and Adams still aren’t ready for starting time at left tackle this year, maybe he makes it back on the squad for another year or two.

  • Lamarr56

I was fortunate enough to meet Max, and he is just a great guy, a total class act. He deserves this pay and I wish him the best in the future. He’s had the Steelers back for years

  • steeltown

I fear AZ might snag him late in free agency

  • Bring him back, bring him back

  • K.S. Ziegler

I seriously doubt that anyone on the roster now can hold down LT (the blind side) nearly as well as Starks. He has bailed the Steelers out the last two years.

  • For some strange reason, I am not completely sold on Gilbert yet. I hope he loses a bit of weight and comes back more mobile and does not fall on people.

  • TJimmy

With Gilbert getting injured and causing injuries to other linemen I hope no one else notices Starks and he comes back to provide competition and depth. I suspect though that Pittsburgh west may take an interest.

  • steeltown

Agreed. I think he’s a solid player, but I’m not sure he’s the answer just yet. He definitely has some improvement to make this year and next, before he even thinks about getting a new deal

  • Alexander Sebastian Heath

I’d retain max starks on a year contract only to have him compete against Gilbert at LT. If Tomlin and the FO doesn’t feel like Gilbert have what it take or isn’t ready, keep max starks. If vice versa, release Max Starks with a “honorably discharge”.

  • James

I don’t think many people are sold on Gilbert. He hasn’t proved himself in my opinion. If he had, no one would be clamoring for Starks to come back. Let’s hope 2013 is his breakout year.

just our most consistent OLman for the Steelers since 2000 not named Faneca…
