According to Alan Robinson of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, the Pittsburgh Steelers have had talks recently with Joel Segal, the agent of guard Ramon Foster.
Robinson reports that the team might make an offer soon to retain the soon-to-be unrestricted free agent. The only problem is that offer might be too late as the Arizona Cardinals, Chicago Bears and Tennessee Titans apparently have interest in the former undrafted free agent out of Tennessee.
Foster has been one the Steelers most consistent offensive linemen the last two seasons and he started 30 regular season games over that same span of time. He played every offensive snap from Week 2 on last season after being forced to leave the opener with an injured eye.
The Steelers don\’t figure to be very competitive with the other teams that are likely wanting to sign Foster, so in all likelihood he has played his last game in Pittsburgh.
Really that’s too bad. I really liked Foster for the first man up role as an OG. On the other hand, he doesn’t have much position flexibility (at least none that he would be sufficiently good with). We should aim to take Barrett Jones, the ultimate swingman, if Foster can’t be retained.
Foster is adequate for both G positions and even backing up Right Tackle. He does not seem overly athletic at his position which I think is where the FO is heading. Take Cooper at 17 and it makes him and Colon a non-issue.
Foster is fine if he is your 4th, 5th, or 6th best o-lineman. The Steelers would only be able to keep him if he is willing to be paid, as such. There is no way that happens.
You never know. We’ve had some real bag-of-bolts types playing guard over the years. He’s only been in the league 4yrs. He plays LOG, ROG and RT. That’s pretty valuable if you ask me.
It’s a shame we develop a player and then some other team reaps the reward for our EFFORTS!!! I would like to see us retain his services. He’s as good as Colon but without the injuries and more position flexibility.
This is really beginning to upset me. We know what we had in him last year and could of had him long term for a good price…we blew it again!!!
Dave Bryan or others: Decastro was perennial best LG coming out of college, why have him slotted at RG yet Beachum, a 7th rounder plays left? Whut?
I think Foster is overrated. He looks better than he is because he has Pouncey to bail him out.
DeCastro played RG at Stanford.
Beachum is built like a guard(shorter torso, ect.) therefore he plays guard even though he played LT at SMU if I’m not mistaken. We have Adams and Gilbert at tackle is another reason he plays guard. Beachum is a backup until he proves otherwise.
We will have Harrison’s money when he is cut but that’s not enough for all our needs, so not sure Steelers will even offer all Harrison’s money to Foster, remember Keenan is still out there. Would be nice if had Colon’s money available to offer to Foster but we don’t & cant so Steelers crapped the bed with Colon’s (no pun intended) deal. Altho Foster doesn’t have the feet to pull at guard, at right tackle he’s ok, & at RT just-ok or just-average is huge, better than some teams have, he’d be a bargain for some teams RT. The frustrating thing is now we are going to have to find another undrafted Foster same thing non-drafted & for less $ than Foster’s gonna get paid by another team now.
Salary cap hell, Signed Gay ,now the Steelers don’t have enough money under the cap to sign anyone else till they cut Harrison ( hate to see it) or restructure more contracts. They still need to come up with 10 million more in cap space to tender RFAs, draft picks and injuy displacement during the season.
Absolutely ridiculous if this is true.. if they have or had interest in keepiong Foster why the hell did they ever let him become a FA… ridiculous
I think the Justin Cheadle kid we had on the PS at the end of last year might stick around.. he has some upside and is known as a mobile zone blocker. I think he fights for a roster spot and ultimately becomes backup OG this year, especially if Foster, Legs and Colon are gone
Ramon Foster and Starks probably saved our season with their quiet steadfastness. We need these two rocks. I guess that we will have to wait and see what the Chiefs think, I mean, Haley and new OLC. It may be their plan to go in a different direction.
