Steelers Scouts Spend Time Thursday With Safeties At Nebraska Pro Day

It\’s not earth shaking news by any means, but I wanted to pass along the Twitter report by Grant Muessel of Huskers Illustrated Magazine that stated the Pittsburgh Steelers had scouts at the Nebraska pro day on Thursday.

Muessel reported that the Steelers scouts were there to see the defensive backs and that they spent a good amount of time drilling and talking with safeties Daimion Stafford and P.J. Smith.

Stafford, a free safety that measured in at 5118, 221 at the NFL combine, improved his 40 time by running a 4.5. While Stafford apparently showed well on Thursday, Smith, a 6015, 210 strong safety did not.

“It wasn’t a good day today, but I will bounce back, said Smith, per a report in the Lincoln Journal Star. “I was overthinking a lot of things. It just wasn’t my day.”

Both Stafford and Smith are late round prospects that could possibly go undrafted. Stafford is ranked the higher of the two.

In the highlights below, Stafford is No. 3 and Smith is No. 13

Dave Bryan: you’ve stated Jason Woriids have been less than stellar vs the run, in coaching jargon, is the LB supposed to take on the lead blocker then tackle the ball carrier or jump off from lead blocker and hit the ball carrier? Thanks.

Containment, especially when asked to play the right side, is where he has struggled the most. He is not awful, mind you, just an area where he needs improvement. Caught inside several times. Didn’t play on the right much last year except for early on. Giants game was perhaps his worst against the run and that was on the left.

He has shown some improvement in that regard.. I really feel he will be productive if/when given the chance. No one will ever truly replace Harrison, but I think Worilds is ready to start if thats the route they must take

Due diligence here.. they know the end is near for our star secondary. I wouldnt be surprised to see an early-mid draft pick at SS and a late draft pick, as well as an undrafted player brought in to compete in camp. They have to know Mundy and DCSmith are not capable replacements and Golden is still a question mark

Exactly, I happen to think all that too.
