2013 NFL Draft – Rounds Four Through Seven Discussion

The third and final day of the 2013 NFL draft is here, and being as you all have done so well with these open discussion post (you crashed the server twice on Friday), we will do it for the final four rounds of the draft, which should move pretty quickly.

I am, I'm me. 40 something, retired and a life long Steelers fan.
  • steeltown

    Happy Day Three!

Im hoping for Safety early today.. and then ILB, OL and DE (in any order) and since there are not many TE’s left, Im hoping for maybe a late Rd big bodied WR prospect (Charles Johnson maybe)

Also, Im starting to think no matter what happened in Day1 and Day 2.. some people would just not be satisfied

  • steeltown

I think Cinci has had a damn good draft….. but shhhh, I dont want to talk about that

The Patriots never cease to amaze.. they move back and acquire more picks.. and grabbed a personal favorite Jamie Collins and my sleeper pick Aaron Dobson

On a side note: Wheaton was another sleeper of mine

  • David McCune

Phillip Thomas would be a sweet pick.

  • Stephen Dale

Cincy, baltimore, St Louis , Minnesota are four teams that have drafted well. Pittsburgh, on the other hand, has made no trades for additional picks, drafted a medical risk in Rd 1, a plodding RB in rd #2, and a short receiver in rd #3.

  • zyzak

There in no way to know if anyone’s picks will work out by year 3. I do think Jones would have been drafted even with harrison still in Pgh. They would know that he had one year at most and that Worilds and Woodley are injury prone.

  • steeltown

Agreed… when Carter started at the beginning of the season last yr, due to Harrison and Worilds still recovering…. it was not pretty

  • rob.pghsteelersfan

One team that really stands out to me is Buffalo. They go out and get their guy in Rd. 1, even though others may not have had him going that high. Then they give their rookie QB 2 WRs to grow with. Time will tell if Manuel is good, but I like the bold moves. This could turn out to be the start of something great for their franchise. I feel like those are the types of moves I would make as a GM.

I also like Glennon to TB. Josh Freeman has had enough time to make things happen and obviously has not. I don’t like it when teams stick with mediocre QBs. It is, for sure, the most important position on any team.

  • Stephen Dale

NE makes these trades almost every year and the Steelers front office sits on their thumbs.

  • rizzo29

True but their track record drafting is so-so at best

  • rizzo29

Cheer up little buckaroo,Pitt will be just fine.

  • http://twitter.com/softdrums Shea Fahr

Throw Oline, Safety, ILB, DE and CB depth up in the air and let’s see which falls to us first..today is a fun day to be clueless!!

  • zyzak

In New England they hate their drafts, they always point to the Steelers and Ravens as expert

  • steeltown

    Haha.. yep

I wouldn’t mind a late Rd big bodied WR as well… I keep thinking about the fact that the only WR’s signed past 2013 will be Brown and Wheaton

  • Don

That’s the guy I have my eye on, too.

  • rizzo29

I live in mass, and its funny every pick they make or free agent they sign all the media and fans here say what a great move by the pat’s then when they don’t pan out and they get released what a great move by the pat’s releasing them.

  • SixburghFan

I saw some folks saying good things about the free safety from Fresno State (Thomas), so I watched the YouTube highlights of him against Oregon. I only got about halfway through but he looked really, really bad, especially against the run. He took bad angles, missed tackles, didn’t wrap up, and looked slow most of the time. Am I missing something with this guy?

  • JT

NFLN reporting the Steelers are trying to trade Dwyer? A bit premature to me. I don’t see why anyone would be willing to give Pittsburgh more than a 7th. They’ve got really no leverage.

  • http://twitter.com/NeffRn Randy Neff

Loved the Bell pick. Steelers finally have their bell cow now.

Hoping for S Philip Thomas here in the fourth. Most likely be gone. Still many solid players left.

  • steeltown

Bad move, if they’re trying to get a 6th or 7th Rder for him… maybe Redman, but not Dwyer

  • David Edward

    Boyce to Pats…good pick there

  • Ahmad

We need a S here in round 4. So far none have been taken so that’s good. Still a ways to go though.

  • steeltown

New England got Boyce now too

  • steeltown

    I know… lets go!

  • JT

Duke Williams is off the board. Not sure if he was on the Steelers radar this year with the off the field stuff though.

  • rob.pghsteelersfan

    Good

  • John Hinton

P Thomas, B Rambo and E Wolff are still on the board – I’m fine with any of the 3 as they WILL make plays for us. Let’s get a Safety in Rd 4!!!

  • rizzo29

    Yes pitt trades up

  • rizzo29

    Sweet Sharmako nice pick boy’s

  • David Edward

    YEEEESSSS! Shamarko!

  • John Hinton

I was excited to see the trade up but NOT the pick of Shamarko when Thomas and Rambo were right there!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Shamarko is midget!!!!!! Not what we needed!!!!!!!

  • dgh57

YES, WE JUST TRADED UP TO GET MY MAN S SHAMARKO THOMAS!!!!!

  • LouPGH

They just traded away next year’s 3rd (assuming we’ll have at least one more due to Wallace and other losses) to get Shark Thomas. So I guess they are not sitting on their thumbs.

  • Eric MacLaurin

I love trading the 3rd rounder next year for Shamarko and keeping our reg 4th this year.

  • John Hinton

What is the FO thinking?! We need size at S…remember Tyrone Carter anyone?! That was a disaster!

  • David Edward

Wow! Landry Jones…thought yhey might go QB but not till 5th

  • Nolrog

/sigh. A QB?? Really? Grab another safety, or some depth on the OL, even depth at LB.

  • Nolrog

I can’t find any details on the trade. We picked up an extra 4th, but what did we give up?

Nevermind, found it. We gave up our third next year for the 4th this year. That seems counter-intuitive. A third round pick is a lot to give up.

  • Ray

QB in the 4th round?!?? UGH.

  • dgh57

Next years 3td rd. pick I heard!

  • Crazy Bone

Let me guess…Tomlin made Colbert draft a QB?!? Colbert is failing here and he is to blame for drafting a mediocre college QB in the 4th round.

  • David Edward

Looks like Uncle Charlie will be QB coach in the near future…probably will be on speed dial for 13 though in case of injury

  • StrengthOfVictory

For all the knocks, the Steelers seem to be getting the guys they wanted left and right. Meanwhile, I’m waiting for the complaining types to object to ANYTHING better than, “I wanted a taller player!”

  • dgh57

Shamarko Thomas may be short but he is thickly built and hits like a “MACK TRUCK” Among other things, he’s fast as he ran a 4.42 at the NFL Combine!

  • rob c.

Shamarko makes up for the loss in height with nice speed, a great vertical, and strength, I liked the pick. But, I am not feeling very OK about the QB pick though.

  • John Hinton

You wanted Shamarko over Phillip Thomas?

  • LucasY59

would’ve been better than Landry freakin Jones

  • LeConte Vaughn

Im impressed with Pittsburghs draft thus far. Its hard to believe that so many people on this STEELERS site are praising what Cincinnati or New England are doing. Really if youhave such high praise for what they’ve done join their bandwagon. Thats the new age fan. This draft has been wonderful in my opinion and we have addressed need in each round. Im might have went Jesse Willams with the Landry pick but I trust my team that on one hand can count how many times we’ve missed the playoffs the last 20 years.

  • LucasY59

yeah Thomas and Thomas at safety would’ve been alot better than a 6th rd QB who has gotten worse over the last 2 years. the LBs that were available were good as well

  • LucasY59

    until they picked Jones

  • Nolrog

He’s 5’11”. Not tall, but not exactly short. And he runs a 4.36 (Wallace ran a 4.33.) You make it sound like he’s Tavon Austin (who by the way, runs about the same speed.)

  • rizzo29

    Nice pick SF getting Lattimore

  • Ahmad

The Steelers are really trying to get more physical here and you can tell by the players they are selecting.

  • dgh57

Without a doubt I would!! Phillip Thomas has off the field issues!
He plays to tentative for me which in turn doesn’t fit the Steelers style of play.

  • Intropy

Well, I like the players the Steelers are picking, but I think a couple are reaches (Bell, L. Jones). I’m none too fond of trading a third for a fourth, but then Shamarko Thomas is a reasonable mid to late third round guy so effectively spending a (hopefully) mid to late third round pick on him is fine.

  • Ahmad

I really hope Ryan Swope falls. If he is there come our 5th round pick we have to take him.

  • Intropy

Who do people like for the 5th? I think the other Thomas safety, FS Philip Thomas, is still in play. As long as we’re listing Thomases, OLB Chase Thomas could be a prospect to kick inside and play buck. WRs Ryan Swope and Da’Rick Rogers would be good additions. None of the remaining offensive linemen excite me, but then I know very little about any of them. Is there a gem left?

  • Ahmad

Yeah and to the Browns no less. Thomas had better be worth it.

  • mokhkw

Matt Summers from Cal fits a zone scheme. Rogers in the 5th would be well worth the risk imo.

  • Thomas Rancy

OMG OMG OMG THEY HAVE TO DRAFT RYAN SWOPE RIGHT NOW!! SWOPE SWOPE SWOPE SWOPE!

  • LucasY59

O-linemen are never that Exciting but there are some worth taking (most in 6th/7th rd) Vinston Painter OT, Reid Fragel OT, Ricky Wagner OT, Xavier Nixon OT, Chris Faulk OT, Luke Marquardt OT, David Quessenberry OT/G, Alvin Bailey OG, Jeff Baca OG, Ormoregie Uzzi OG,

  • David Edward

Klein just went…thought he might slip to them

  • Intropy

I saw that too. I didn’t realize he was still available. Good value for Carolina.

  • David Edward

    Hawthorne…good choice there in 5th

  • Intropy

Terry Hawthorne. There are bigger needs with better prospects. I hope they saw something. Could he be a FS?

  • Intropy

That being said it’s not a big reach or crazy to go CB there or anything like that.

  • David Edward

Yeah, he has some physical skills and meaureables…can do a little returning too. Looks like Vince Williams could be in play at ILB in 6th

  • Eric MacLaurin

That did ruin it a bit but he at least has potential to take over for Ben some day and, if you are going to pick a developmental guy, it might as well be with a future pick.

  • StrengthOfVictory

I’m hoping Rogers and Swope both stay out of the division…unless of course WE can snag one later as a late-draft steal.

  • LucasY59

Jones would’ve been there still in the 5th maybe in the 6th, Tyler Bray is still available (just as good or better upside IMO)

there were a lot of players available in the 4th that were MUCH better than Jones

  • mokhkw

How’s everyone doing in the Draft Contest? I’ve got 4 out of 6 so far, none 1st overall and 3 in the wrong rounds……

  • steeltown

AZ selected Swope in the 6th Rd.. damn whata bargain

  • StrengthOfVictory

Think it’s worth gambling on Da’Rick Rogers this late?

  • mokhkw

    Yep.

  • StrengthOfVictory

Me too. Hope he falls…and that the Steelers grab him.

  • Eric MacLaurin

I don’t think he would have lasted another round and don’t think Bray is as good.

I’m sure there are several players picked after him that are better. 1 vs 70 is pretty overwhelming from an odds standpoint.

But… If he really does have a good chance to develop into a starter he is well worth it. If they wasted what works out to be about a 3rd next year and don’t think he has that possibility they’re idiots. I don’t think that is the case.

  • David Edward

Justin Brown with 186…guess him and Landry can throw on sidelines.

  • Nolrog

San Fran is in a much better position to take the risk.

  • Eric MacLaurin

I’ve decided that Spence is much healthier than reported.

  • rizzo29

Yes just happy for the kid hope he stay’s healthy

  • LucasY59

wouldve been a helluva better pick than UDFA Justin Brown!

  • StrengthOfVictory

Can’t say we’re the only team steering clear, though. If they don’t want the drama, who am I to say they should take the risk after Rainey?

  • LucasY59

It didn’t have to be Rogers, use the pick on someone worth drafting, not a guy they can pick up after the draft is over

  • hergieburbur

    He must be.

  • Intropy

So, who now? WR Rogers, FS Lester, DE Kruger, TE Otten, ILB Mauti?

  • LucasY59

    Coach Butler doesn’t think so

  • Steelers32

I looked, but did not see him is Rodgers still on the board?

I will be good all year santa I promise just pick him next

  • SteelSpine

Yep, Him & Landry on the scout team.
Figure Landry being here will help Brown’s transition & odds of Brown making the team.

  • SteelSpine

Agreed, but for fun I’ll fill your request: I wanted shorter QB. Only because Landry wasn’t BAA, Too much credit for being ideal height. Leftwich is ideal height too & that worked out well:( But I know QB prospects this year were picked over & were mediocre to begin with, compared to previous years. Seems like we have cut QBs who were better than Landry. If imaginary pressure in the pocket bothers him, I’m afraid he wouldn’t recover from boos at Heinz field. In a couple years I think he’ll be replaced with the next clipboard holder. Sorry just my hunch that’s all.

Overall I cant complain about this draft. We had to draft for the positions we drafted & there’s many different ways & orders to do it. And this year with our having many high-priority draft need positions, it was impossible to please every fan in the first 2 rounds.

  • SteelSpine

For folks who wanted Eifert we’ll get to see him twice a year. I liked Jarvis at 17. But If I’m Cincy I’m not worried about Eifert against Steeler LBs, Eifert figures to be mismatch because our LBs get torched by TEs, & Polo might be too injured to play in whichever game. Of course that’s forgetting our D is best, plus Eifert needs to beware of Clark bringing the wood.

Jarvis bashers on here have advantage first season because Eifert will play before any rookie for LeBeau. Also even for next year, the thing Jarvis wasn’t asked to do much in college is cover TEs. But Jarvis has a knack for stripping the ball loose, & that dude loves to ping-pong his way into QBs.

  • RW

You’ve had one comment on here in your history and this is it. Don’t knock steeltown bc he’s knowledgeable about what other teams are doing – if you don’t pay attention and give credit where it’s due, you’re bound not to be a humble and responsible fan.

  • Pete

I’m thinking Eifert is going to be really good. I so wanted to see the Steelers take him. Bengals already have Gresham who was selected in the 1st round in 2010. They have the potential of doing damage similar to the Pats. More teams are using the TE to create mismatches and do damage as more and more pass catching TE are coming out of college. Having 2 good ones is a luxury.

I’m not going to bash this draft because we really have no idea how it turns out until a few years have passed. It looks good on paper but we’ll see in a few years.

  • Russian Steel

Shmucko Thomas AKA Mr Concussion AKA leads with his helmet AKA not nearly as good as Phillip Thomas who went about 5 picks later to Washington.

  • Russian Steel

let’s see, we get two below average receivers when we could have gotten Ryan Swope in the 5th who is better than both of those bums put together. Oh that’s right…Steelers are racist and never draft a white receiver. He must suck cause he’s white. Sorry forgot.

  • Russian Steel

Love Jarvis Jones…pretty much rest of draft was either a reach or outright bum.

  • SteelSpine

Bengals having spent a high pick on Gresham, & Gresham’s game being similar to Eifert, made me puzzled when Bengals used their 1st rounder on Eifert. Like everyone tho I knew Eifert would be grabbed in last half of 1st round.
All of what you wrote there makes total sense to me.

  • http://www.facebook.com/matthew.christie.75 Matthew Christie

Bengals had an amazing draft. I was even jealous of their draft last year. I would seriously swap entire drafts with them with that performance. Shawn Williams, Gio Bernard, Eifert…all could of filled needs for steelers very well.

  • PoKey21

To sum it up the Pittsburgh Steelers 2013 Draft should be graded at a B or B-. Jones, Thomas, and Hawthorne all fill needs and all have the potential to be good productive players. Jones and Thomas have the potential to be difference makers. Hawthorne can be a solid contributor. It wouldnt shock me to even see Vince Williams and Nick Williams maybe getting a few starts a couple years down the road. As for their Defensive picks they get an A.

As for their picks on O, well thats a different story. They reached a lot, but they obviously feel confident with the players they got. Wheaton was the only value pick on offense for the entire draft. Bell, Jones, and Brown are all toss-up at important positions. Jones and Brown could have possibly gone undrafted. Bell could have been there in the 3rd or at worst late 2nd. Bell might prove the world wrong though. The major concern I have with him is the new RB rule in the NFL where backs cant lower their head into defenders. Bell is a bruiser and if he cant lower his head his value as an NFL RB is severely diminished. Im ecstatic they finally got a back-up QB, and I really think Jones has potential after 2-3 years of honing his craft. I just dont like him in the 4th round. there was way better value on the board at that point in time. Brown most likely wont make the team, but his height would make him extremely valuable if he can adjust to the pro game. as for Offensive picks they get a C or C-.

Averages out to a B or B- for this draft. Another pretty solid draft for the Steelers with a couple of interesting Offensive picks, and as always finding late Defensive talent.

  • Jollyrob68

I don’t think It’s so much bashing as it was needing offensive weapons who can contribute asap.
plus resent report’s of poor work ethic. I think he really wants to be Great.

  • Jollyrob68

Yes,Shamarko plays both positions & fast. Philip is slower and Fs.
We already have Robert Golden. They could of taken both.

  • Eric MacLaurin

It’s funny how we don’t hear anything about spence until just before the post draft free agents are available to sign.

  • jroc

Like to see u call dat to his face. 5’8 and 213 pds.. can light em up. I agree with LeConte. If u r Steelers fans.. quit bashin them. What other team has more super bowl wins. The experts constantly view Steelers as a good organization that drafts well. If u really look at Patriots drafting past 6 or 7 years, it is not good at all. It’s great to get more picks, but u still hav to draft the right guy. I bleed black and gold and i support our draft. Do i question a few picks.. yes, absolutely. But i am not a professional scout or have all the information that the Steelers organizatoon has when they draft.

  • nbaballer1

http://www.youtube. c o m /watch?v=gVD6TFaHBdo this is our game against dallas last year for anyone that wants to see some football while we wait haha
