Steelers Bring In Free Agent RB Larod-Stephens Howling For A Visit On Wednesday

The Pittsburgh Steelers are meeting Wednesday with another former Arizona Cardinals free agent running back as Larod-Stephens Howling is in town for a free agent visit. Howling was the Cardinals seventh round pick out of Pitt back in 2009 and has played four seasons in Arizona

Howling had110 carries last season for 356 yards and 4 touchdowns in limited action. He has, however, been a decent return man since coming into the league as he has 163 kickoff returns for 4,067 yards and 3 touchdowns in 57 total games.

The Steelers have already brought in free agent running backs Beanie Wells and Ahmad Bradshaw so far this offseason, but signed neither of them. Wells\’ knee reportedly did not pass a physical, while Bradshaw remains in a walking boot following his January surgery.

The Steelers most likely will not sign any free agent running back until after the draft later this month. They reportedly remain in intersted in Bradshaw and plan on having him back in over the course of the next few weeks.

Howling would be a potential candidate to replace the Chris Rainey role of KR and speed back. Not a bad fit with the current group, but as mentioned above, I can’t see them signing him or Bradshaw until after the draft.

  • Lamarr56

He’s a burner, strait up. Can play both RB and slot WR. Great playmaker.

  • JDR

if they sign him or Bradshaw before the draft, that takes pressure off having to draft a back unless a really good one slides to us.

  • Jollyrob68

They’ll draft a RB regardless of who the have on the roster.

  • Superdriller316

I would rather draft a back with speed. 652 yds on the ground in 4 years just isn’t that productive. His first two years as a returner were real good, but he fell off the last two years. All of our rejects go to AZ not the other way around. If you want a fast back/returner, draft Kenjon Barner. Just because a guy went to Pitt doesn’t mean he’s good. The more retreads we sign, unless we cut them before the season starts, will have to be carried on the 53. So that’s Batch, Dwyer, Redman, and any other ones that we sign. I say we go with the ones we have and draft Kenjon Barner and Zac Stacy. Then cut Batch and only go with 4 RB’s and 1 FB.

  • Jollyrob68

They can sign him for vet mini & rescind Remand tender to sign Bradshaw later.

Love Zac Stacy….think someone in the 5th or 6th round is gonna get a real bargain with him.

  • David Edward

I like Stacy too and is a nice fit. But, he’s no secret, other teams like him too and he may go early third day…as in 4th round..absolutely would have to take him in 5th if he’s there and you want him othewise he’ll be gone.

  • Kysteeler

Avg. 3.2 YPC behind that AZ line last year is like 6.0 YPC on any other team. I would take him over Batch for sure, but would like to see this position hit on in the draft, unless they want to give Dwyer a chance.

  • Kevin Gobleck

Maybe if we sign him we could pick up M. Lattimore and have him gradually take over the starting role as he heals to 100%

The 2 guys I felt we could get in FA and would help the team were Victor Butler and Howling. Butler of course came for a visit but didn’t get a contract. Howling is probably a what if just in case the draft goes in a direction where they do not get a HB.

  • Shannon Stephenson

I believe Stacy is the most underated back in this years draft.

  • SteelSpine

Many good points & explained there. Good stuff!

  • Cody Younkin

He would be a good flex player, but would still need a guy to take the bulk of the carries in the draft.

  • another visits steelers will not sign dont understand bringing this guys in and do not sign them ! a waste of time

  • Kyle Owens

    Dion Lewis>>

  • LouPGH

That’s like driving a Honda Fit while your Maserati is in the shop.

  • Kevin Gobleck

And a good old ford F-150 ( Jonathan Dwyer ) but yeah I agree ahahaha

  • JDR

Nile Davis ARK 230lbs and ran a 4.37

  • JDR

nobody can be sure Lattimore will heal up enough to play from such an injury, he’ll be lucky not to walk with a limp the rest of his life.. he’s a good story, but you dont waste picks on stories, you need players…and we’ve had enough injuries that why would we even consider a guy who is already damaged goods… 2 or 3 less injuries and we would have been in the playoffs
