Steelers Re-sign LB Stevenson Sylvester To A One-Year Contract

The Pittsburgh Steelers re-signed linebacker Stevenson Sylvester to a one-year deal on Wednesday, according to Bob Labriola on Twitter.

The Steelers had decided not to restricted tender Sylvester, their fifth round draft pick in 2010, prior to the start of free agency, so thus he became a free agent at the start of the new league year.

In his first three seasons in the league, Sylvester has played all of 75 snaps on defense as he has been mainly used on special teams. Last season he missed a good part of the preseason and the first three regular season games after he suffered a knee injury that needed a procedure.

Terms of the one-year deal are not yet released, but it is expected to be for the minimum.

Hmm. Didnt see this one coming, but I’d rather have Sylvester then Dan Connor, or any of the other scrubs they brought in. With Worilds assuming starter responsibilities, Sylvester will have to be big on special teams

This makes NO sense to me!!!! Why not wait until after the draft to make this decision?

  • steeltown

Ha! This is interesting, I guess he knows the system. They basically just saved $$$ by not tendering him and re-signing him as a FA, very interesting.

With all the bodies we have at ILB (Timmons, Foote, Mcfadden, Rolle, Sylvestor, K.Wilson, Spence) maybe they wont be selecting ILB in this years draft…… but then again…

  • TrueSteelerForLife

Dave, have you heard about them bringing in Larod Stephen Howling. Now that pick up, I could understand!

  • Probably not a good sign for Spence either…

  • steeltown

I listed him only because he is still on roster, but I dont expect him to play this season. Spence’s situation is an odd one, to say the least

  • Jefferson_St_Joe

I think they should have done this with Redman, as well.

  • steeltown

True, but I bet Arians wouldve snagged Redman

  • steeltown

Just heard they are bringing him in

  • David Edward

Nothing really exciting here since Stevenson is not a future replacement for Foote unless he takes a major step forward. He’s mainly just a ST player at this point, but it shows the Steelers moxie in the FO..they saved probably $700k in cap space by not tendering him.

  • Be nice if they signed Sly knowing they are gonna Draft Mauti and park him for a year until he is finally healed. We seem to have enough depth there otherwise.

  • NW86

Not surprised by this at all, I figured when they didn’t tender him, they would later sign him for the minimum when he found there was no interest elsewhere. Although I did think they might wait until after the draft. If it is a minimum deal though, it doesn’t really matter – very little cap implication and very little guaranteed money.

Sly’s only competition to eventually replace Foote, is Sly’s health. McFadden/Wilson/Rolle are just bodies, We had no breathing room if Foote gets hurt. Worilds on special teams was never an impact on STs. If Sly can stay healthy, & thats a big if, this signing was a SMART move.

  • Maurice_hill_district

Noone is a future repacement for Foote if they dont take a major step forward. The other guys for it Wilson/Rolle/McFadden have not inhereted anything. With all the posts about Foote starting because Foote knows the system, well then Sly knows it better than Wilson/Rolle/McFadden/Conner. If Sly is healthy he will beat out Wilson/Rolle/McFadden for top backup ILB this preseason.

  • steeltown

I think its going to be a very exciting battle for both backup ILB spots in camp this year, people arent giving Mcfadden & Rolle a shot, but I think they might turn some heads, add Sly, K.Wilson and a possible draft pick, should make for a pretty exciting training camp

  • Maurice_hill_district

    Exactly. No surprise.

  • Totally Agree!

  • David Edward

Correct which is why I think they will draft ILB. I still like Arthur Brown in first or Jon Bostic in 3rd.

  • steeltown

Mcfadden played both spots MACK and BUCK in the preseason last year and looked pretty good doing it. I’m not ready to write him off after one season.. he’ll give Sly a run for his money.

Rolle and K.Wilson are merely camp bodies, though Rolle has starting experience and could really push some of the other guys

  • walter mason

So we signed him because nobody else wanted him?

  • Doni609

Just another non-move for a rapidly down-spiraling front office. Maybe a better term would simply be WTF!
