Cardinals Release Former Steelers Emergency QB Brian Hoyer On Monday

On Monday, the Arizona Cardinals released quarterback Brian Hoyer just a little over two months after they tendered him at a second round level prior to the start of free agency.

Hoyer, who was with Pittsburgh Steelers last season for just a short period time while quarterbacks Ben Roethlisberger and Byron Leftwich recovered from their injuries, was claimed by the Cardinals following his waiving by the Steelers.

Hoyer saw action in two games with the Cardinals and it included him starting the final game of the season against the San Francisco 49ers. In those two games, the former Michigan State quarterback was 30-of-53 passing for 330 yards with one touchdown pass and two interceptions.

Following his waiving from the Steelers, there was speculation that Pittsburgh would try to sign him back at some point, but since that time they have added free agent quarterbacks Bruce Gradkowski and John Parker Wilson, and also drafted Oklahoma quarterback Landry Jones in the fourth round of the 2013 NFL draft.

At this point, it seems unlikely that the Steelers will have interest in Hoyer as they normally only carry four quarterbacks during the offseason. With Gradkowski locked in as the backup to Roethlisberger, and Jones drafted to look at long-term as a backup, the need for Hoyer no longer exist.

According to reports, the Cardinals tried to trade Hoyer prior to releasing him, but had no takers.

About Dave Bryan

I am, I'm me. 40 something, retired and a life long Steelers fan.
  • zyzak

    Browns will pick him up

  • hergieburbur

EXACTLY why I said it would be stupid to offer a draft pick for him last month when people were clamoring for it.

  • steeltown

Agreed. I was upset to lose Hoyer last season, but that was when we had Leftwich and Batch as backups… that has all changed now.

  • steeltown

Ha! Agreed.. people are foolish, he was an asset last season when we had Leftwich on roster, now that is all an afterthought

I suppose if Parker Wilson doesn’t show anything in OTA’s, the Steelers could always waive him and pick Hoyer up prior to camp. Of course he would still only be a camp body (like JPW is) and wouldn’t make the 53 man roster unless one of the top 3 had a long-term injury, and he probably knows that. I’m sure he’d rather go somewhere where he felt like he had a fighting chance to make the roster on his own merit.

Who knows !!!!!!!! Hoyer might be better then either Gradkowski or L Jones. Appears he has some NFL tools .

  • Michael Mazanowski

    They need too!

  • Michael Mazanowski

    Arizona’s bluff!

  • Bill Bob

I agree with that statement I would bring him in and cut Jim-bob John Parker Wilson. He has a good arm and knows our system and he started two games behind there offensive line so he knows what its like to be under siege that has to count for something when Ben and Bruce go down you don’t want to have the depressed drunk Landry Jones go it. How the f^^^ can you be depressed at 22 , Drunk I understand

  • hergieburbur

Possible, though I highly doubt the Cards would cut him loose if that were the case.

  • TsarPepe

I just don’t understand why the Steelers had to rush with the signing of Gradkowski. Drafting Jones, and now picking up Hoyer would have have been just perfect. I don’t see Gradkowski as anything better than Hoyer.

  • hergieburbur

Yeah, but he’s not really any worse either.

  • mokhkw

He’s equal to Gradkowski & a shit-load better than Wilson or Jones. God how I hate the selection of Jones this year……

  • mokhkw

Probably got depression after watching his own game tape, I know I did after spending the last 2 weeks watching them & trying to find something to like about Jones. I didn’t.

We should trade Jones to the Jaguars for a late Rd pick in ’14. He’d fit right in with Blaine Gabbert as both of them shit themselves under pressure. Actually, Gabbert would welcome it because next to Jones he looks poised in the pocket.

Pisses me off that we gave up a 3rd next year to basically get Shark at 111 & then get Jones at 115. I like Shark but instead of giving up a 3rd we should have given up a 6th this year & not bothered getting Brown at 186.

If either Jones or Brown are still in the NFL after 2 seasons I’ll be very surprised.

Imo, without 20/20 hindsight, I think the selection of Jones is the worst pick the Steelers have made since Willie Reid.

  • Nolrog

Steelers had to protect themselves. What if Jones was picked in the 3rd and Hoyer was never released? Then we’d really be stuck.

  • JohnnyV1

Can never raise the QB depth bar too high. It’s a long offseason & preseason, anything can happen. Not sure who our 4th QB is, but I’d bet Hoyer is an upgrade.

  • Black & Old Until Gray & Old

QB corps appearing to look good. Regular Season starter QB roster lineup prediction: Rothlisberger, Gradkowski, Jones. Will miss Batch. Would make a great QB coach for the black & gold.
