Report: Steelers Expected To Sign WR Steve Breaston Within Next Couple Of Weeks

John Clayton of ESPN mentioned on Thursday’s episode of NFL Live that the Pittsburgh Steelers are expected to sign free agent wide receiver Steve Breaston within the next couple of weeks.

The Steelers brought Breaston in for a visit several weeks ago following his release from the Kansas City Chiefs, but chose not to sign him at the time.

There were reports at that time that suggested Breaston, who was originally drafted by the Arizona Cardinals, had inflammation and early arthritic symptoms in one his knee and that he was considering Regenokine treatment, a procedure that entails removing blood to make a serum, and then injecting it back into the knee to fight inflammation. It has since been reported, however, that Breaston opted against having that procedure done.

The Steelers drafted two wide receivers in the 2013 NFL draft this past weekend in the form of Oregon State wide receiver Markus Wheaton and Oklahoma wide receiver Justin Brown. Wheaton is expected to make the 53 man roster, while I have my doubts that Brown will make it.

In addition to starters Antonio Brown and Emmanuel Sanders, the Steelers also have veterans Jerricho Cotchery and Plaxico Burress, neither of which plays special teams, on the roster.

As I pointed out a while ago, Burress is not a lock to the make the roster, and should the Steelers ultimately decide to sign Breaston, who worked previously with offensive coordinator Todd Haley in both Arizona and Kansas City, it would further cloud the future of Burress with the Steelers.
