The Terrible Podcast – Talking Upcoming Steelers OTA, Dave-Te Thomas Draft Recap & More Episode

Steelers Podcast

Season 3, Episode 104 of The Terrible Podcast is up and co-host David Todd and I begin the show by looking ahead to the first OTA session for the Pittsburgh Steelers that will get underway on Tuesday. We highlight a few things that we will be looking for specifically in the reports made by the media and hopefully David will be provide us with some details of what he observed over the course of the week on our Thursday episode.

With not much news to report on the Steelers specifically, David and I have a look around the top stories around the league currently and we give our comments on them.

In the second part of the podcast, David and I welcome back our good friend Dave-Te Thomas and he gives us his thoughts on the Steelers draft as we go pick by pick. We also get his thoughts on a few of the undrafted free agents that the Steelers signed in addition.

As usual, a few other talking points are of course mixed in along way.

About Dave Bryan

I am, I'm me. 40 something, retired and a life long Steelers fan.

I agree completely with Dave DE Thomas re Bell, Wheaton, Thomas, and especially Jones & Jones. Since before the draft, I also thought the Georgia defense made Jarvis Jones’s production seem better than it actually was. I expect him to be pancaked by NFL blockers, left in the dust by running backs and tight ends, and completely stonewalled by quality NFL left tackles against the rush…in other words, an epic bust!

Likewise, I was amazed the Steelers chose a mediocre QB with a valuable 4th round pick who seemed totally cavalier while throwing picks in key moments of high-stakes college games.

I also agree with Thomas that our defensive line could make or break our 2013 season.

If I’m an offensive coordinator for our opponents, I’m planning to manhandle the weakest link on the defensive line with one offensive lineman…which frees blockers to target our linebackers…which forces our DBs to play the run and allows our opponents offenses to control the clock, field position, and the game.

Re the draft and our first (and most important) pick, Thomas is spot on, i.e. who would you rather see manning our defensive right side: Ziggy Hood backed by Jarvis Jones…or Sharif Floyd backed by Woirlds (or Kasheem Greene who was still available for our second 4th round pick)?

I don’t know, Jones seemed like a good pick to me. We needed to start filling in that spot and Harrison leaving created a void. Ziggy and McClendon have to show why we drafted them.

I agree with Dave about our need to need to bolster the NT position. It was shocking that Jesse Williams was still available in the 4th round and I was really disappointed we passed on him and opted to draft Landry Jones instead.

I’m still skeptical about Jarvis Jones but I really think they hit a home run by drafting Bell, Wheaton, and Thomas.
