Report: Steelers Kelvin Beachum Gets First Team Reps At Right Tackle With Mike Adams Out

With Pittsburgh Steelers tackle Mike Adams sidelined for a while as he recovers from stab wounds suffered in an early Saturday morning carjacking attempt, it was Kelvin Beachum and not Guy Whimper that took the first team reps Tuesday at right tackle, according to Jim Wexell on Twitter.

Over the course of the first two OTA sessions, Beachum has worked as the backup center behind starter Maurkice Pouncey. Last season, however, Beachum started the last five games of the regular season at right tackle after both Adams and Marcus Gilbert were sidelined for the season with ankle injuries.

Beachum said last week that he was struggling with his snap consistency while learning the new position, but vowed to get it right in the future.

The Steelers depth at the tackle position is not great and it really didn\’t improve with the signing of Whimper several weeks ago. Whimper, who was released by the Jacksonville Jaguars early in the offseason, struggled at the right tackle position over the course of the last several seasons.

About Dave Bryan

I am, I'm me. 40 something, retired and a life long Steelers fan.
  • steeltown

Interesting…. Malecki, Golic Jr or Joe Madsen playing 2nd Team Center now?

  • dgh57

I kinda thought Beachum would be the next guy up at RT. The fact that Whimper isn’t tells me they’re not that high on him. To me the signing of Whimper was just rehashing the Jonathan Scott experiment that didn’t work out so well!!

  • steeltown

I thought that to regarding Whimper.. but after this Mike Adams situation, it made me realize we are basically one training camp injury away from Whimper making the roster as the backup RT

  • dgh57

Yes, it’s a scary thought of Whimper at RT!!!

    Is Antoine Caldwell this available?

  • dgh57

Or maybe Joe Madsen who I know nothing about!

  • Shea Fahr

I think so and I am quite sure the Steelers are looking at FA options.

  • StarSpangledSteeler

The Steelers need to take a hard look at Eric Winston. I know he won’t come cheap, but we have zero depth at OT. He provides starter quality depth and already has experience with Bicknell at K.C.

Gilbert and Adams back each other up at LT. Winston backs both of them up at RT. Leave Beachum inside as the C/G back up. Along with Embernasty at G. That is a solid set of 7 guys at OL.

  • Matt Searls

So you want to sign Winston… Because of all of our cap room? And you want him to be a back up? Child please

  • steeltown

Caldwell is purely an interior lineman

  • steeltown

I like the idea of having a player like Winston on roster, but he’ll cost to much to be a backup RT

  • Jonathon Bert Schade

What’s the word on Mike Farrell?

  • steeltown

I like that kid… haven’t heard much on him through OTA’s

  • Shea Fahr

But he can play Center too and keep Beachum out at RT

  • steeltown

    True

  • Shea Fahr

Farrell was Third team RT the last I heard since Long has been the 2nd team LT.

  • Shea Fahr

I like where you are going with this but it seems he wants Franchise money. I still find it curious the Steelers made a play at a Franchise LT earlier in the offseason that ended up with the Rams though…allegedly.

  • Kolie Oak

I’ve posted numerous positive things regarding Beachum.
I truly believe he would of cracked the starting lineup whoever was healthy or not.
I personally believe hes going to be an awesome Center…

  • Shea Fahr

He is a very nice young man, very intelligent and has been there all off season working to improve his game. The Steelers love him and he deserves to get his chance to start regardless of position.

  • SteelerFanInMD

Also the Jamon Meredith experiment. Too bad Max Starks signed with SD.

  • steeltown

One thing I think we can be almost certain about, this kid is going to be a good player. All the reps he’s getting at Center, RT and previously OG along with the starts that he got last season at RT will truly help him moving forward. Also take into consideration he was a 4yr starter at LT in college… this kid is going to be good.

  • cencalsteeler

I gotta say, it’s pretty hard not to like Beachum! Happy for him getting reps at multiple positions, thus confirming how high the coaching staff is on this kid. On the other hand, this also validates why I am still scratching my head on the Wimper signing.

  • Bradys_Dad

Yes I’m a broken record …. sign Lego for the league min now ! With center properly backed up the focus can then begin on T and G and we can say adios to senor’ Whimper.

  • NW86

Really, you think he’s going to start even if everyone is healthy? Whose spot do you think he will take?

  • NW86

I agree. I don’t think anyone will be able to convince me that Beachum (or Malecki or anyone else on the roster) would make a better backup Center than Legursky. But it seems like we’re in the minority on Lego.

  • StarSpangledSteeler

Nice photo. You look like you know what you’re doing in life.

We just freed up $5.5 mil. Some of that went to signing the rookies. Some can be used for Winston. Omar can fit him in creatively with a low hit this first year. And in an emergency we still have a couple of vet contracts that could be re-structured.

I don’t view a solid #3 OT as a waste. Neither Gilbert nor Adams has proven they can stay healthy. So Winston would likely be starting quite a few games. He might even take one of their starting spots long term. We’re paying Cotchery veteran money as a #3 WR. Why not put that money to a solid #3 OT instead. Same goes for a veteran long snapper. Put that money to OT.

Our franchise lives and dies with Big Ben. Any money spent protecting him is well spent IMO.

  • StarSpangledSteeler

I wouldn’t be so sure. Jake Long wanted franchise money. Brandon Albert wanted franchise money. But Winston might just want to go to a winning team.

  • StarSpangledSteeler

How much could he cost? Bryant McKinnie has been a bargain at LT for the Ravens for 3 years now. Winston couldn’t cost more than him.

And as far as being a back up. On our team, back up OTs tend to start many, many games. They aren’t sitting the bench. Look at Starks, Gilbert, Adams, Jonathan Scott, etc.

  • Ahmad

I knew Beachum would be the next man up. Yeah he was learning Center but seeing how he did at RT last year it only makes sense he gets a shot with the ones.

  • Matt Searls

Yeah that’s my sister in the pic with me so careful there buddy. We had under 1 mil in cap space before June 1st. Every bit of that money is going towards rookie signings. And the whole back up thing is just funny. If we wanted an over priced back up we would have drafted one.

  • SteelersDepot

Not true!!! Because of displacement, only about $1.6M in cap space will be used to sign all 9 draft picks when the smoke clears.

  • walter mason

    Re-sign Jonathon Scott! (not)

  • Matt Searls

The thing about displacement is just spreads the cap hit out. It’ll hurt us next year. Tired of having no cap room? Signing an expensive back up is sure to help

  • Matt Lipner

You don’t know what displacement is.

  • SteelersDepot

lol, Displacement is related to the Rule of 51. You have no idea what you are talking about.

  • Jason White

Displacement means when a guy is signed his salary will fall into line with the rest. If he is one of the top 51 highest paid on the roster he will bump someone else out of the top 51 and the difference between the two salaries is the only cap space that gets eaten up. So even if they sign a guy to a 1 million dollar contract it doesn’t mean he instantly eats up a 1 million of cap.

  • Christopher Wilkes

I wouldn’t mind signing Winston either, but why take a poke at the guys picture and make an assumption about his life. At least he puts a stamp on what he says, and doesn’t hide behind some anonymous Disqus account like most of you pussies.

  • SteelersDepot

    Enough with the language.

  • charles

Now it seems that Starks would have been a steal. Beachum is a life saver.

  • Matt Searls

Geeze used the wrong word chill. I meant spread out. No need to foam at the mouth for a chance to put someone down. U got me i used the wrong word

  • Christopher Wilkes

lol, how about ‘poo-poo heads’ instead?
