Former Steelers DL Chris Hoke To Be Coaching Intern This Year At Training Camp

Former Pittsburgh Steelers defensive lineman Chris Hoke announced on Wednesday that he will be a coaching intern for the team this year at training camp. Hoke, who originally signed with the Steelers in 2001 as an undrafted free agent out of BYU, played 11 seasons in Pittsburgh before retiring in January of 2012.

“I\’m going to do a coaching internship with Coach Mitchell of the Pittsburgh Steelers,” Hoke said on the latest episode of the Craig Wolfley Podcast. “I\’m going to be his assistant and work with the defensive line and help him work out those D-linemen. Try to impart my knowledge that I learned over my 11 year career with the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 3-4 defense and try to help out these young guys.”

You knew it would only be a matter of time before Hoke would get into coaching and it is good to hear that he will be working with the young guys this year in training camp. Hoke certainly knows the 3-4 defense inside and out and being as he mostly played nose tackle during his 11 years in the league, he will certainly be a great mentor to Alameda Ta\’amu and Hebron Fangupo.

No better guy to have coaching right out of his playing days than Hokie! The guys respect him and his always been a technique guy.

  • sgtrobo

he had to be a great technique guy, he was so undersized yet so effective

First Woodson now Hokie, I’ll definitely take him and our D-Line sure could use the help!

Ex players have to start somewhere and where better to start then where they off in their playing time.

  • Terrence

That is really great news. Hokie Pokie!

I read somewhere that Hokie was assisting the coaches at my old high school, Avonworth, last fall. I’m sure he’s going to make a great coach on the pro level. It’s really cool to see the Steelers bring in these former players to give them a leg up towards their life’s work.

Without a doubt, one of the most under-appreciated guys to ever play for the Steelers. This guy was great, glad to see him come back.

Awesome news.. Lake, Woodson, Hoke, hell even A.Smith was present at minicamps… these young guys are getting invaluable information and leadership

Coach Mitchell is a great teacher and arguably the most underrated coach in the league. I’m sure Hokie learned a ton from him over the years he spent here.Chris seems to be a good communicator, so he should do very well if he stays in coaching.

It’s often the career backup/rotational guys that end up being better coaches than the superstars. I wish nothing but the best for Hokie. He’s a great guy and I bet he’ll be an outstanding coach.

Does anybody know what Aaron Smith is doing post NFL career? Thanks.

  • steeltown

Not sure exactly, I know he has like 5kids and one of them has lymph leukemia… im sure he spends a lot of time with them at this point

I remember a post a while ago that he is also a coaching or scouting intern with the Steelers.

  • steeltown

Oh yea I almost forgot about that, he is a summer scouting intern now

We need the Hokie Pokey at Latrobe again!

Hoke has been one of my favorite players through the years. A guy who never complained and when called on always did a stellar job. Great to see he is still helping the team.
