Steelers HC Mike Tomlin Says Rookie S Shamarko Thomas Plays With Passion And Enthusiasm

Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin was back home in Virginia this week to take part in the Hampton Roads Youth Foundation weekend and he took time out of his schedule to sit down for an interview with Bruce Radar of WAVY-TV.

Tomlin was asked during the interview to comment on rookie safety Shamarko Thomas, who went to Ocean Lakes High School in Hampton Roads.

“I always love the Hampton Roads guys and Shamarko is an easy guy to love,” said Tomlin. When you turn on the Syracuse tape from the last few years he plays with a passion and enthusiasm we place a value on, not only in Pittsburgh but in Hampton Roads.”

As far as the 2013 Steelers team being a mix of veteran and young players, Tomlin weighed in on that topic as well.

“We\’re excited about the mix of talent that we have both young and old for this year,” said Tomlin. “Really, if you look at it, it\’s probably year two of that type of a mix for us. Obviously we intend to do better than we did a year ago. We\’re just really excited. I like the emergence of some new veteran leaders and I also like the emergence of some young emerging stars, some guys that we are going to be counting on heavily of course in 2013.”

As usual, Tomlin also praised the division that the Steelers play in as he thinks it makes them a much more prepared team as a result.

“We love the rough and tumble AFC North,” said Tomlin. “We live by the motto \’iron sharpens iron.\’ Obviously we get in a playoff situation, everybody\’s going to be credible and tough and we believe playing in our division helps us and prepares us for that.”

Mike Tomlin talks with Bruce Rader

  • Dom

    I just love this Kid.

  • Madi

He’s going to be a beast on Special Teams.

  • Trey Brooks

I wonder hows does He compare to the honey badger here in AZ ? The cardinals moved him to safety at 5’8″ 175 lbs.

  • Philippe Bourdon

He certainly has a compelling story… I hope it translates on the field.

  • Madi

Well, Shamarko is the same height, about 27 pounds heavier and 0.8 seconds faster in the 40, with 10 more bench reps. Has 1 more inch on a vertical jump and 16 inches on the broad jump. That’s one way to compare.

  • Matt Searls

I met shamarko last weekend when he was in Virginia, it was awesome, took all the time to talk and answer questions and take pictures with whoever wanted them. And then he posted them on Facebook. He seemed humble and thankful, can’t wait to see what he can do

  • Brendon Glad

I will never criticize that pick…no matter what unforseen things could possibly happen. I would be fairly stunned if we aren’t talking about him as a solid (if not excellent) starting Steelers Safety ten years from now.

  • Brendon Glad

Honey Badger is my pick to be defensive rookie of the year. But that doesn’t mean the Steelers should have taken him. Because almost anyone can hold off on their bad-side for a year or 2 when it’s absolutely necessary. His talents are elite…and I was fairly relieved when he went to Arizona instead of Cincy, as I predicted.
But the Steelers need to stick to their mantra. And he doesn’t fit with that.

  • Terrence

Great story man. From all the stories I have read and seen he sounds like a awesome person.

  • Terrence

I cannot wait to go to training camp and see this guy.

  • Matt Searls

Very, and he’s built like a tank. A tank with a 40 inch vertical and runs a 4.4. I’m 6″4 so I’m a lot taller but I felt tiny next to him.

  • Shannon Stephenson

Just his story is one for the ages. A young man who takes care of his brothers and sisters because both parents have passed. Playing college football, going to class and taking care of many bothers and sisters. It would be easy to be bitter but he is just the opposite. I pray for him to succeed everyday!!!

  • cencalsteeler

A lot of feel good stories throughout the team. From Shark and Will, to Ike and Ryan training like maniacs to extend their careers. I can’t say enough about how this years team is evolving. Such a breath of fresh air !!!!!!!! Mike who? It’s a great day to be a Steeler fan!!!!

  • Steves

Someone need to tell the story of Shamarko being a young head of household. Now that’s a story we would all like to hear!
