Report: Steelers Believe RB Le\’Veon Bell Has Lisfranc Injury

According to Jay Glazer on Twitter, the Pittsburgh Steelers believe rookie running back Le\’Veon Bell has Lisfranc injury that they are hoping will not require surgery.

This matches all of the fears that several have had since the Michigan State product was injured Monday night against the Washington Redskins.

Head coach Mike Tomlin announced via a statement on Wednesday that the team was seeking a second opinion on the second-round draft pick following his Tuesday MRI.

Bell will most definitely be sidelined for the remainder of the preseason and we can only hope that he will be able to play at some point this season.

I am, I'm me. 40 something, retired and a life long Steelers fan.
  • Vin Twok

    Damn it!

  • Mkeller

We can only hope for the best. The only RB on that roster that has a prayer of being dynamic is Dwyer and that’s only if the line plays exceptionally and remains healthy. Oh and he doesn’t eat himself out of his uniform again.
Extremely ironic that they pass on Lacey because of a toe and Bell goes down with a foot.

  • StrengthOfVictory

    No! No! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!

How is Darren McFadden POSSIBLY healthier right now than Bell?? I don’t just want a second opinion, I want an 18th opinion! And while we’re at it, someone send up the “Heath” signal!

  • Patrick

They can put him on IR recall.

  • Eric

As if my day could get worse

  • greeny

Like I have stated before. You don’t run guys out in preseason games hurt when they are sure fired to be significant contributors in the regular season. This could be a result of over compensating for a dinged up knee. Players toughness is proven in meaningful games, not meaningless ones.

  • Patrick

Agree and why was Ben playing if the goal was to only hand off? Tomlin is losing it

  • Paul Jones

agreed. i’ll be playing in traffic if anyone needs me. glad my day stuck in a cube went so well. thanks for drafting lacy colbert, kid looks like a beast vs another injury

  • Matt Manzo

Lets just hope that Dwyer turns into a monster! We’ve all been hoping for it now we have to pray for it! “Oh good lord please let Dwyer turn into the mini bus and dominate all season! “!!!!!!!!

  • Jason

This dude carries the ball 1,000 times in college and is durable as they come. As soon as he puts on the black and gold he has multiple injuries including now the lisfranc injury that I never heard of until last year and now plagues a new player seemingly every day. How can we be so snake bitten injury wise?? Why can’t Guy Whimper have a lisfranc injury??? Tomlin needs to be proactive in ensuring that Dwyer DOES NOT room with Woodley on the road to ensure no late night eating contest are going on. I think Dwyer and Redman can carry the load for now but damn I was excited about Le’Veon.

  • Matt Searls

    I quit

  • Paul Jones

where did this curse come from… ?

  • Mkeller

There’s no way we’ll ever know if his favoring the bruised knee contributed to the foot injury but I agree with your point nonetheless. Smashing it up between the tackles on 4 consecutive plays out of the gate as if to have a HaHa welcome to the big league moment was absolutely silly. That’s why I would never hire a high school golfer to be my OC. Something about Haley’s whole demeanor that’s just flat out unappealing.

  • treeher

I’ve been wailing about this too in a lot of posts. I don’t know why Steelers are so snake bit. Of course, “lisfranc” is the new term for a foot sprain, which we’re all familiar with. A severe lisfranc might result in a more pronounced ligament tear or even dislocation requiring surgery. They are hoping that it is just a “foot sprain” and will require rest, not surgery.

  • dgh57

This injury hasn’t been proven to need surgery as of yet so STOP panicking!!!

When it is proven to need surgery then go find the nearest bridge to jump off of!!! LOL!!!!

  • StrengthOfVictory

True, but why do you think a second opinion was sought?

Doc: Hmm. Looks to me like he’ll need surgery.
Tomlin: Obviously, I want a second opinion, and things of that nature!

  • Alexander Sebastian Heath

I really don’t want to be that asshole but… I saw this injury happening a while ago. Coming out of college both Mendenhall and Bell share similar habit; overpower their running which would get them injured easily. I understand Tomlin wanted to get running game going but this isn’t how you do it. You do it by throwing the ball to spread out the plays selection. Look at Tom Brady! He had Corey Dillon… then he had Ridley who ran for over 1,300… Ridley! A dude who is supposed to be exact same as Isaac Redman only without receiving and blocking abilities.

My gosh I feel the urges of showing them gametapes of quarterbacks who had running game succeeding, it was never about averaging 100 per game or 2 tds. It was never about the production. Its always had been about keeping defense honest.

It WASN’T coincidence Big Ben threw beautiful, every time he threw it was like Beatles sang for first time in thise 3 games where we had RBs with 100 rushing yards in each.

  • Mkeller

My guess is the news will be bad…….or we would know the deal by now.

  • Patrick

Brady has Belicheck and an all world line

  • Mkeller

Isn’t Mike Tomlin the dude who said “I think Guy Whimper has done some good things”?

  • dgh57

Ha ha, for myself because if I’m about to jump off a bridge I would at least like to know for sure the reason before doing so!

  • Eric

Exactly correct. Kobe Bryant blew out his achilles when his knee was hurt. Bell’s knee was hurt on Thursday and he played Monday. WTF.

  • Brendon Glad

Well, I’m not going to “proclaim-doom” or anything. Because that would be over-the-top. Bell may still be awesome. However, RB’s who start dating Lis-Franc usually have a rough relationship.

Thus, that is the very reason I always criticize the Steelers when they take a RB in the first 2 rounds. To me, the risk outweighs the reward. And I’m not using hindsight. I posted that same sentiment on here the day after they drafted him. It had nothing to do with Bell himself…strictly about Steelers history and the RB position.

Parcells hated to draft RB’s highly. I believe in his philosophy on that aspect of NFL football. And Steelers history of the last 40 years has done almost nothing to make me waver. It shows Franco Harris as the only high-drafted RB who anyone could consider a tremendous early Steelers draft pick at the RB position. (right? Am I forgetting someone?)

YES, Bettis was a 1…but he wasn’t OUR 1. We let him fall out of favor b4 we snagged him. That’s different.

So while I’m hoping Bell becomes the 2nd of the last 40 years… knowing that little tramp named Lis-Franc has been flirting with him certainly does NOT make me feel better about spending a 2nd on a RB.

  • Mkeller

I wouldn’t jump off a bridge over this. If I go home tonight and my girlfriend tells me she’s knocked up…then yeah…where’s the nearest bridge.

  • StrengthOfVictory

Sorry about your girlfriend. My bad.

  • Mkeller

No problem. They have DNA tests for that sort of thing. I told your Dad about it but the stubborn SOB wouldn’t listen.

  • Jason

Brady has 2 first rounders 1 second rounder and 2 undrafted players as an O-line. The Steelers have 2 first rounders 2 second rounders and 1 undrafted player as an O-line so if NE’s line is all world it’s either a coaching issue or a Colbert issue.

  • Brendon Glad

I’ve told y’all on here that I get dizzy and disoriented if a day goes by without some bad news from the Steelers on the injury front. So at least B.Glad’s equilibrium remains in-tact today. (it’s been a very non-dizzy 2.3 years) smh

  • StrengthOfVictory

Draft position does NOT equal level of talent. Just look at Arian Foster and Tim Couch. Bottom line, Brady gets time to throw. Ben? Ben gets time to scramble…if he’s lucky.

  • Alexander Sebastian Heath

Thank you. Admittly Brady make his O-Line look much better to his timid and mechanics of throwing. That still doesn’t take away from the truth…

There are quarterbacks who had true running game.

Peyton Manning ad Edgerrin James? What about that time with Joseph Addai and D. Rhodes?

Aaron Rodgers and Ryan Grant- then James Starks? Ray Rice’s increase of production in recently super bowl run?

Heck we didn’t have a #1 running back but our running game ran trhough Mewelde Moore during that 08′ Super Bowl and REMEMBER we also had worst O-line ever to play in Super Bowl.

Again, Spread the offense! Don’t give me the ratio or number of a “balanced offense” no, that’s not how it works. Gimme a commitment of playing style and you shall receive a solid running game even if “numbers” weren’t there.

  • Alexander Sebastian Heath

    A bandwagon fan.

  • Alexander Sebastian Heath

Unfortunately, its no secret Tomlin is an idiot when it come to offense. Big Ben has made him look so good. I trust Tomlin’s usage of selections in draft, he is definitely a player’s coach (the coach who players would love to play for) but when it come to what to do with offense, what play selection, and how you treat your offensive players.

If an offense score a touchdown, the offense just is that good. If offense couldn’t score a touchdown, offense is that bad. It seem like Tomlin hold that to his rigid standards. Not everything is that simple but don’t think he acknowledged this. Hopefully Todd Haley will increase more freedom with players’ management. We need this… badly.

  • paltel

Dwyer is as good a feature back as any back in the league not named AP. Last year he had 600+ yards rushing on 159 carries. If he’d of been handed the ball another 100 times or so, Dwyer would of rushed for 1100 to 1200 yards. The remarks made by fat guys on message boards about Dwyer’s, so called, weight problem are at a minimum vastly overblown, if not outright fiction perpetuated by the fat guys quoting themselves.

  • Dan

I don’t know much about Lizfranc injuries, but it sure looks like a real wildcard in terms of time out. Seems like it is a year plus for Santonio, but others have been back much more quickly. Guess it is a matter of severity. Bad news nontheless.
Incidently, I googled “lizranc injury” and this article from Steelerdepot was 3rd in the search results (props to Dave’s SEO efforts), and Le’Veon Bell is already mentioned in the wikipedia article about it.

  • Jason

NE’s quick hitting passing game helps keep Brady clean too and Ben was getting hit way less the first half of last season than at any other point in his career with the short passing game. I certainly know that draft position dosen’t=talent level. Just saying a first round lineman should out perform an undrafted one in most cases unless you’re being out scouted or out coached which in the case of Tomlin vs Belicheck we certainly are.

  • paltel

Oh hell, lets just bubble wrap everyone as soon as they are drafted, then store them in padded rooms and just let them out on game days.

  • dgh57

Where would Jarvis Jones be right now had he not seeked a 2nd opinion with his Spinal Stenosis? All 2nd opinions don’t turn out bad.

  • paltel

Oh boy, more baseless Mike Tomlin bashing by a guy that string together coherent sentences, let alone coach a football team. Tomlin may have his warts, but you haven’t indentified any.

  • Shea Fahr

So it’s Colbert’s fault the kid sprained his foot? You are kidding right?? Please…

  • Anthony Renzelli

    Lmao

  • Jason

Well the sad truth is Dwyer couldn’t have carried the ball 250+ times last year because anytime he was handed the ball 2 plays in a row he asked to be taken out of the game. Whether you just think fat people on message boards are hating or not the guy was out of shape last year. Hopefully he took his conditioning seriously and runs for 1300 yds and 12 td this year. I just hope they pick one back and stick with him.

  • cencalsteeler

C’mon Matt! We need ya brother!!! Suck it up!

  • Christopher Wilkes

Who cares. Dwyer was going to beat him out anyways. 1,300 yds and 10 tds for Dwyer this year, while Redman plows for another 400 in short yardage and another 5 tds.

  • Brendon Glad

Dan, I don’t know much either…I’m going off of memory here, so any mis-statement of fact is unintentional.
However, I remember when Duce Staley played for the Steelers. And I remember the broadcast team saying “Duce Staley is the FIRST player in NFL history to ever suffer a LisFranc injury and return to play in an NFL game.”
I believe SOMETHING has been done in the way of medical-technology since then, that has made it a little “less-rare”. But no ifs-ands-or-buts about it…this AIN’T good.
Because Staley DID return…but not even close to the same. That little FSU returner for us a couple years later DID return…but as a shell of himself. Not good, no matter how it’s sliced. Unless they are wrong, and it’s not a Lis-Franc.

  • Shea Fahr

    …This..

  • Alexander Sebastian Heath

You had me at “good as a feature-” no.. just… stop. I’m actually one of few that defended Dwyer but that statement alone is ridiculous. Oh man.

  • T R

confirmed it liz and frank did come visit Bell.. he out at least 6 weeks

  • T R

Well least no cuts of running backs now.. all of them going to make the 53 now.. Bell, Batch, Dwyer, Redman, LSH and well maybe not Alexandrer

  • Alexander Sebastian Heath

if you love the Steelers so much that you couldn’t critcize them.. I get it. That’s fine but telling me I’m wrong especially after a strong TREND of repeatedly patterns and same problem with currently OC that we already had before Haley. Be straight up- have anyone knew Arians was such outspoken person? I didn’t until he went on to the Colts… Todd Haley is known for a verbal communicator, have we seen any of that yet? Tomlin is a good head coach but that doesn’t mean he is perfect.

Its very obviously when hiring, Tomlin tell everybody they do his way or get out.

  • joed32

Also Cedric Benson and Darren McFadden are recent ones, just depend on the severity.

  • paltel

“anytime he was handed the ball 2 plays in a row he asked to be taken out of the game”

I’d bet big money that you can’t support this statement any better than you can support that Dwyer has recurring weight/conditioning issues. As I recall Dwyer only had 7 starts in 2012, so it requires no stretch of the imagination to believe he could have gotten another 600 yards by starting nine more games.

  • paltel

I’m pleased that I brought laughter to your day. I do hope the weight off of your posterior stays off.

  • Bob Loblaw

Last I checked, Ben threw the ball a few times that game. I’d bet they were gonna have him throw even more until they saw how well the line was blocking for him.

  • Anthony Renzelli

Thanks, but I think you should be more worried about the weight on dwyer’s posterior considering your bold and overoptimistic prediction. Dwyer is not in the top 20 starting backs in the league, let alone right behind peterson. Hope you’re right though bud, it looks like you’ve played a hell of a lot more football than I have.

  • Jason

You’re right my friend. As far as scientific proof I have none. I just have my eyes that watched him ask to come off the field numerous times and those same eyes who saw his girth but when superfans like you cling to a player there’s no convincing you.

  • Mkeller

Yep. Early reports are 6-8 weeks. Sounds pretty bad. That’s with no set backs. Don’t take it personally. I wasn’t blaming you.

  • Mkeller

Most teams don’t get 2nd opinions when the news is good. The players actually have to go through the players union to get a 2nd opinion outside of the team when they disagree with a diagnosis. The more I looked at your Jarvis Jones comment the more I wondered what was wrong with you. Not even close to relevant.

  • paltel

“I just have my eyes that watched him ask to come off the field numerous times…”

How many years have you been a lip reader?

“those same eyes who saw his girth”

Don’t tell me, you’re also one of those guys that guess peoples weight at the county fair.

You’re just making stuff up because you have no evidence offer, scientific or otherwise. If you had the ability to lip read what was said on a teams sideline, then you’d be working for the Patriots.

  • dgh57

The point of my J. Jones comment is if he had settled with the 1st diagnosis he wouldn’t be playing football now. Therefore if Bell did the same thing he could be having unneeded surgery. I believe the Steelers are seeking a 2nd opinion to make sure this surgery is indeed needed and they are smart in doing so because misdiagnosis happen a lot in the medical world. I know of people in my life that had they not seeked a 2nd opinion they would’ve had unneeded surgery.

  • Mkeller

I am aware of why a 2nd opinion is sought. If I were given bad news I would seek one myself. All my original post stated was an opinion I had….that was correct…that the news was probably not going to be positive. Yes…USC said Jarvis’s career was over. Georgia disagreed. Good deal. Had USC given him a good diagnosis do you think Jarvis gets a 2nd opinion? No because there would be no need. You’re arguing my point. If you’re getting a 2nd opinion it usually means the 1st opinion sucked. 9 out of 10 times you’ll get affirmation with the 2nd opinion. My guess is the Steelers are working off the better of the 2 reports in the hope they get away with it. Do I know that, no.

  • dgh57

I have heard the same thing Jason is saying that he asked to be pulled from games. Do I know it to be fact? No, but the rumor is still out there.

  • Jason

Well just judging by your photo I’m pretty sure football probably wasn’t a big part of your athletic career. When a player points to himself and waves toward the sideline it is the universal sign for I’m tired get me out of here. I figured you’d know that from your years of being team mascot in high school.

  • paltel

Ultimately, I don’t believe Dwyer would still be in Pittsburgh if the rumor were true.

  • Matt Searls

Haha you know I’m not going anywhere man, I’ve just been a huge leveon bell fan for the past year, and was siked when we got him. 6 weeks, 4 games, I guess it’s not that bad. Von miller is missing more

  • paltel

I know I have won the debate when my opponent is reduced to making personal attacks. Thanks for playing.

  • dgh57

The whole point of the 1st part of my 1st post was off of what Jay Glazer said through his Twitter post that the Steelers believe Bell has a Lisfranc injury through apparently what his 1st doctor said which was bad. So I’m well aware the 1st diagnosis was bad when I posted. People were freaking out over that before they had heard what the 2nd opinion was. So I posted in the 2nd half of my 1st post that when it is proven or when the 2nd opinion has confirmed it that in a joking way they could then go jump off a bridge. I might also add it makes no sense to bother with a 2nd opinion if there was no chance of the 1st opinion being wrong! Myself I was keeping my cool because at the time I hadn’t gotten the 2nd opinion yet. It’s hard sometimes to get across what you’re trying to say when it’s put in words only.

  • JPDQ

While I am disappointed to see yet another injury rob us of a high draft pick, with the day I’ve had it’s just simply not that big of a deal in the scheme of things. I’ve accepted our seeming mediocrity this season. Hell, at least I’m aware of it going into Week 1, and not surprised by it after we go 6-2. When you look at the trends, no team stays at a consistently high level for a solid decade. Just doesn’t happen. We’ve had a good run with Ben. Sadly, there’s not enough pieces around him to finish his career out on a high note, I don’t think.

But damn, some of these comments have made me laugh, so thanks for that, guys.

  • AndyR34

Alexander…please get a book on English grammar and read it. You have some good things to say, but you are so hard to read and understand.

  • Christopher Wilkes

Batch won’t make it, and, if by chance he does, it won’t be to play RB. Only reason he makes it is because everyone else sucks at specialteams.

  • dgh57

There were other rumors flying around during this past draft we were trying to trade him.

The Steelers can know the rumors are true and still keep him on the roster as they have done with him showing up at the OTAs at nearly 260 pounds. If they feel a players’ problems can be worked out they’ll show patience in that players’ behalf if they see upside in him. Now that Bell is down Dwyer isn’t going anywhere.

  • Christopher Wilkes

Shutup, Jason. Why don’t you post a picture of yourself, tough guy.

  • Christopher Wilkes

    Fat guys?

  • Jason

Lol. I guess you’re right. Bottom line is you seem to have a lot more faith in Dwyer than I do and I hope I’m 100% wrong. I just hope Tomlin picks a back to get the majority of the carries so we can see what they can offer as a feature back not a committee approach.

  • paltel

Just a few weeks ago, it was also rumored that the Steelers were. trying to trade Cotchery. As long as we have third rate sports writers and fans that believe them, we will have baseless rumors. Repetition of a rumor does not make a rumor true.

I do/did not believe the trade rumors about Dwyer or Cotchery, however you are free to believe whatever you like.

  • T R

see i know how this going to work.. Say he dont need surgery… wait 6 weeks when time for him to come back and realize he cant and need surgery then they have surgery anyway and he out another 10 weeks. Go ahead and have the surgey and get him right so we can have him down the stretch…don’t wait like you did with other and have surgery 3 weeks before practice

  • Alexander Sebastian Heath

You are right, English is my second language. Heck I’m deaf which mean the dialogue usage of language itself is pretty much.. impaired for a guy like me, that being said I know when I’m clear on something. Sure there is some grammar errors among my comments but that doesn’t mean it can not be understood. 99% of the time people understood just fine, it might be just you. And few people who is overly-critcized of this bastard language. Cheers.

  • dgh57

I don’t believe the trade rumors either as there as been no evidence to sway me to believe or not to believe. That’s how I handle all rumors.

It still makes me wonder if the trade rumors were tied somehow to the rumor that Dwyer needs a breather and wants out of the game. I guess we’ll never know for sure.

  • Lisa Legs

Spencer Ware was who I wanted, dont care much for Bell
Bell, Ware and Felix, thats a good tandem at rb.
    Dump these other bums.
ware could even play QB if needed. Bet he gets released
    Seattle is way too deep.
