Report: Steelers WR Plaxico Burress Suffered A Torn Rotator Cuff

According to Adam Schefter on Twitter, Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Plaxico Burress suffered a torn right rotator cuff Thursday during practice and it could sideline for the season.

Burress, who reportedly had his arm in a sling after practice, landed on his shoulder after failing to come down with a ball that was contested by cornerback Ryan Steed and safety DaMon Cromartie-Smith.

If indeed Burress is out for the season, sixth-round draft pick Justin Brown and Derek Moye will most likely do battle for the fifth wide receiver spot moving forward if a veteran free agent is not signed.

Burress was re-signed right at the start of the free agent signing period this past offseason after registering three receptions and a touchdown in four games with the Steelers last season in limited playing time. Burress will turn 36 next week, so this could indeed be the end of the road for him.

About Dave Bryan

I am, I'm me. 40 something, retired and a life long Steelers fan.
  • Kenneth Wilt

At his age…that could be a career ending injury.

  • Christopher Wilkes

I really thought we’d be a better team with Burress on the 53 this year. I don’t think there was a player on this team I was rooting harder for. I’d rather have Brown make the roster, and maybe even Moye, than I would Gilreath, but I think we need to seriously look for a veteran receiver, cause Plax is done with that injury. What a shame!

What about…. Randy Moss, lol? :D

  • Kevin Gobleck

i’m hoping for temporary IR for him if no one is using it

  • Lamarr56

Darn! I was really pulling for Plaxido, wish he didn’t have to go down like this. I think this opens the door for one of the bigger receivers, either Brown or Moye. Both have looked impressive so far in camp.

Dave or others: If season ending injury happens in pre season, is FO on the hook for entire season’s salary or some sort of settlement? if so, how much?

  • OIF3gunner

Thank God!!! I didn’t even want him on the team.

    Next man up!

  • Jefferson_St_Joe

They are on the hook until he is healthy enough to play and passes a physical. (Thankfully, his cap hit is at the minimum, although he gets paid more than that.) The Steelers can not afford more than 1 or 2 more season ending injuries. Otherwise. they will be forced to make salary related cuts or extensions that lower this year’s cap hit.

  • StarSpangledSteeler

I agree with everything you said about Burress. I was really rooting for him as well.

Trying to look on the bright side. Not too long ago, a 6th rounder named Antonio Brown got an opportunity and made the most of it. Hopefully Brown or Moye can do the same.

  • NW86

What a ridiculous statement. I was on here just yesterday arguing why I think the team should keep Brown or Gilreath over plax, but I would never thank god that a player got hurt. It should have come down to the coaches decision. Besides, even if you don’t care about the player and only look at the team – now they have to pay plax on IR, AND pay another WR. None of them make a lot but that is still a half million or so that can’t be used elsewhere.

  • Paul

    Burress career is over

  • James Kling

    Bring back Hines!

  • DoctorNoah

    Not likely

  • steeltown

I feel bad for him.. that TD he caught against Cleveland last year might have been his last, hope he enjoyed

  • Shannon Stephenson

I didn’t want him on the team but not in this fashion…I wish him the best and hope he recovers fast.
