Steelers 2013 53 Man Roster Prediction – Post Preseason Game 2 Edition

The Pittsburgh Steelers have now played two preseason games, so it is now time for my fifth 53 man roster prediction for the 2013 season.

If you missed my first four 53 man roster predictions following the draft, OTA practices, pre training camp and first preseason game, you can view them by following the links provided.

As I do every year, I will have a new prediction after each and every preseason game leading up to my final 53 man roster prediction which will be released right before the final round of cuts take place.

Feel free to list your prediction below in the comments below.

Offense: (26)

Quarterbacks: (3) Ben Roethlisberger, Bruce Gradkowski, Landry Jones

  • Nothing to see here, so move along now. Jones will be on the inactive list quite a bit.

Running Backs: (5) Le\’Veon Bell, Isaac Redman, Jonathan Dwyer LaRod Stephens-Howling, Baron Batch

  • The Bell injury now means both Dwyer and Batch make the roster. Being as Stephens-Howling will likely be the kick returner, Batch can play special teams so both Dwyer and Redman do not have to. Do you really want to carry only three healthy running backs?

Fullbacks: (1) Will Johnson

  • I told in my last prediction they should have put him in bubble wrap.

Wide Receivers: (5) Antonio Brown, Emmanuel Sanders, Jerricho Cotchery, Markus Wheaton, Justin Brown

  • There might be some room to play with here if they think they can get Brown to the practice squad, but when you think about it, they need seven inactives and so why not carry Brown and make him one of them?

Tight Ends: (5) Heath Miller, Matt Spaeth, David Paulson, David Johnson, Jamie McCoy

  • I still do not really have a firm grip on what they will do with both Miller and Spaeth. If Miller goes on Reserve PUP he must miss six weeks. If Spaeth goes on injured reserve he must miss eight weks. Spaeth will be four weeks removed from his surgery come week one, so if they think he can get back after the bye week, they just might decide to carry him on the roster. As far as Johnson and McCoy go, I still think there is a chance Michael Palmer can beat out one of the two. We will have to see how Johnson plays Saturday night.

Offensive Line: (7) Maurkice Pouncey, David DeCastro, Ramon Foster, Mike Adams, Marcus Gilbert, Kelvin Beachum, John Malecki

  • So you want to keep eight offensive linemen? Ok, who is your eighth? Is he on the roster yet? Why guarantee the salary of Guy Whimper by keeping him? Besides, Mike Tomlin only dresses seven for a game. If they keep both Miller and Spaeth, then one of the other three healthy tight ends would have to be an emergency tackle until they get to a point where they accommodate and eighth. Risky? Hell yes it is. Really, who is the eighth?

Defense: (24)

Nose Tackles: (2) Steve McLendon, Alameda Ta\’amu

  • I can\’t see them giving up Ta\’amu so soon. He will be inactive for a while so Woods will be the backup to McLendon.

Defensive Ends: (4) Brett Keisel, Ziggy Hood, Cameron Heyward, Al Woods

  • I Believe this is as cut and dry as it gets. They should be able to get Williams and Arnfelt to the practice squad.

Linebackers: (9) Lawrence Timmons, Larry Foote, LaMarr Woodley, Jason Worilds, Jarvis Jones, Stevenson Sylvester, Marshall McFadden, Vince Williams, Adrian Robinson

  • Chris Carter has shown nothing during the preseason so they might as well keep Robinson and make him or Williams one of the seven inactives.

Cornerbacks: (5) Ike Taylor, Cortez Allen, William Gay, Curtis Brown, Josh Victorian

  • Victorian has been seeing a lot of preseason playing time. I think Hawthorne can go to the practice squad and DeMarcus Van Dyke to injured reserve. Van Dyke can be retained next offseason as a restricted free agent. I really do not know how bad his hamstring injury is, however.

Safeties: (4) Troy Polamalu, Ryan Clark, Robert Golden, Shamarko Thomas

  • As much as I would like to keep Cromartie-Smith, there is just no room for him unless something is done with either Miller or Spaeth to clear a spot for him.

Special Teams: (3)

Kicker: (1) Shaun Suisham

  • This is an easy call.

Punter: (1) Drew Butler

  • Brian Moorman is pushing, but I still have Butler as the leader.

Long Snapper: (1) Greg Warren

  • Easy call with just one.

Practice Squad: (8) Nick Williams, Terry Hawthorne, Joe Long, Chris Hubbard, Alan Baxter, Alvester Alexander, Derek Moye, Brian Arnfelt

  • Williams is a project. Long and Hubbard make sense with Cheadle sidelined and likely headed to injured reserve. Moye stepped up and showed great hands. Baxter showed enough to work with. Alexander is here because they need an extra practice running back and Arnfelt really showed potential.

PUP: (1) Sean Spence

  • They have a lot of time with the rules of the PUP to see if Spence can make it back this year.

Injured Reserve: (4) Plaxico Burress, Nik Embernate, DeMarcus Van Dyke, Justin Cheadle

  • Not knowing the seriousness of the hamstring injuries suffered by Van Dyke and Cheadle makes this a tough call and really a shot in the dark.

Week 1 Inactives: (7) Justin Brown, Landry Jones, Adrian Robinson, Alameda Ta\’amu, Le\’Veon Bell, Heath Miller, Matt Spaeth

  • Not knowing the seriousness of the hamstring injuries suffered by Van Dyke and Cheadle makes this a tough call and really a shot in the dark.

About Dave Bryan

I am, I'm me. 40 something, retired and a life long Steelers fan.
  • Jason Brant

Nice job. I agree with all of it, except that I’m hoping they can keep Hawthorne on the roster.

  • ELIJAH

Reggie Dunn big play waiting to happen.

  • Russ Ruffing

Going back at least through 2007, the Steelers have NEVER kept less than 9 O-linemen, and even kept 10 in 2008. So there is no way they only keep 7 in my opinion. The 8th will either be Joe Long or someone they pick up.

In the same time frame, they have always kept 7 D-linemen. I know the TE injury problems are severe, but there’s no way they hold on to 5 regardless of the injuries. It just puts too much burden on other positions. Plus, they have kept only 2 TE’s before, so

Here is what the Steelers have kept at the final cuts each year since 2007, starting with 2007 and ending with 2012:

    DB – 10, 8, 9, 10, 9, 9
    LB – 8, 8, 9, 8, 9, 9
    DL – 7 every year
    WR – 6, 5, 5, 6, 5, 5
    OL – 9, 10, 9, 9, 9, 9
    TE – 2, 3, 3, 3, 3, 3
    RB including FB – 5, 6, 5, 4, 5, 5

  • Timothy Rea

I’d cut Baron batch and keep 3 RB’s with Moye or Dunn as WR/KR #6. Also, would rather have Hawthorne on the roster in place of Jamie McCoy.

  • Kenneth Wilt

    QB: Exactly what I have.
RB: I think the Batch decision and 5 RBs comes down to how severe Bell’s injury is. I find it interesting that Spaeth might be back after the bye week, but Bell couldn’t be back by say Game 3 without surgery? I think we only carry 4 including Bell.
    WR: Exactly
TE: I think it is a roster advantage to put Heath and Spaeth on the lists at this point unless they really can be back early. I think Palmer beats out McCoy.
OLine: There is no one currently here deserving of spot #8, but I bet we keep Whimper anyway.

Summary of Numbers: Freed up a spot at the RB position, but I think that will be immediately eaten up on the Oline. Freed up 2 spots at the TE position though, getting the total numbers on offense down to 24.

On Defense, I make 2 simple changes to take up the freed up roster spots. DCS at safety and Hawthorne at CB I think end up making it. When Spaeth and Miller are ready to return, Johnson and Palmer will be cut to make room more than likely.

  • steeltown

Mostly agree with all of this.. though I would hate to lose some of those PS players, but we don’t really have any choice with the injuries at TE and RB, although I would consider Spaeth to IR with designation IF D.Johnson looks good over the next couple weeks. This way we can then keep Arnfelt, N.Williams or Hawthorne on the 53man

Totally agree about the LBs… Carter is still non-existent out there, they’ve been sliding Worilds over to LOLB when Woodley exits the game anyway so he can backup the Left side while Jarvis/Robinson backup the Right.. and this way we can keep V.Williams as well

  • Shea Fahr

Solid predictions. The Van Dyke hammy is a real head scratcher to me as well.

  • RASTA

I hope we can somehow keep our lightning-in-a-bottle player in Dunn. Everyone knows we need ANY kind of advantage and help that we can get for our special teams. Go Steelers!

  • Rick Hankey

I think they have to find some place to get Dunn on the roster.

Also, I disagree on Butler. I like Moormans hang time – Butlers kicks always seem to be very returnable. I would give up a few yards on the length of the kick and get it back on the net with Moormans hang time.

  • Douglas Andrews

I agree and with Bell’s injury being not as serious as first thought, I would feel comfortable keeping only 3 RB like you said. I’m hoping for Dunn we need some big play potential in the return game and Dunn looks the part so far.

  • Douglas Andrews

Yeah he’s a real mystery. He really needed to stay healthy this training camp. I wanted to see his CB play something we haven’t seen very much if at all from him.

  • Jefferson_St_Joe

Dave: How close to the cap does 58 players on the payroll put them?

  • steeltown

Hang time and distance in the last preseason game
    Moorman: 3.78 (36) 4.75 (38)
    Butler: 4.6 (53) 4.65 (40) 4.8 (51)
Butler was better overall in both categories, while Mooreman was better in the first game against the NYG, the overall avg hang time through both games is basically the same when comparing the two.. I think Butler is ahead based on playing time and of course age and upside

    Dave, Dave, Dave…

The Bro-mance with Baron Batch has gotta end, he can retire to the “Frank the Tank” home for over-hyped low-round rookies. If you are worried about special teams and healthy running backs, then you keep Reggie Dunn as a specialist/WR so you may free up LSH to focus on RB duties. Batch isn’t as a good a RB as LSH nor gives the bang Dunn can in ST, I agree with David Todd, Batch’s gone!

Also, no way they carry 5 TEs; PUP and/or IR designation will be used and I could possibly see McCoy sneak on; if not PUP and IR then we ride with Paulson and hopefully DJ till Miller’s ready.

Disagree with Hawthorne (and agree with the other comments), he makes the team due to the fact he won’t survive practice squad since he was 1st Rd talent once upon a time….Victorian is just a phone-call away if needed.

I do like the 7 OL and 9 DB route even if we put Miller and Spaeth on PUP/IR to free up some spots for the Dunn’s and possible extra LBs of the world!

    Ur still the man Dave!

  • Soliciting Steelers

Hopefully DVD stashed on IR like last year so that he may return and try 1 more time next training camp…If Rod Woodson loves him then we gotta give another shot right?

  • Soliciting Steelers

If Dave wants to keep Batch for ST then I think you gotta go with Dunn and get bigger return on investment on Punts and KOs. Frees up LSH to focus on running game…love to see Spaeth designated, do we know if someone else gets hurt after we designate Spaeth that we can switch as long as Spaeth isnt activated???

  • Soliciting Steelers

    Here Here !

  • steeltown

I agree, its time to part ways with both B.Batch and C.Carter… but I do think they hold onto Batch until Bell is healthy and active

  • Soliciting Steelers

Agree with both you guys, Dunn has pedigree to help ST and Moorman/Butler is tight race!

  • steeltown

Im not sure you can swap players with the designation

  • Soliciting Steelers

Keep Batch even if you keep LSH healthy and off ST with Alexander on PS? Also, you gonna deactivate Redman or Dwyer for Batch? Just saying…I do like your insight on just about everything on here by the way :)

  • Kenneth Wilt

Well, with the Jones news….get the marker out. Time to make some changes to this.

  • Soliciting Steelers

Don’t understand the trade, Jones isn’t any different (or better) player than LSH…Robinson had some talent and would prolly make 53 man roster (like Dave shows) unlike Felix…checked calendar and its not April Fools so….?

  • Douglas Andrews

Rod coached him with the Raiders for one year so he should know about his CB skills. If Rod says there is something there I trust his HOF opinion.

  • JohnnyV1

    QB-3, RB-4, FB-1, WR-5, TE-4, OL-8 = 25. Spaeth in IR

    K-1, P-1, LS-1 = 3.

    NT-2, DE-5, OLB-4, ILB-5, S-4, CB-5 = 25 Includes Woods @ DE & winner of Williams/Arnfelt battle. Sylvester is OLB/ILB, so he’s @ OLB, then McFadden, Williams and winner of Rolle/Garvin/Wilson.

That’s opening day. When Heath comes back, they cut a TE and bring on an extra WR, DB or LB.

  • steeltown

I think LSH is more injured than initially thought.. and with Le’Veon also out, it makes sense

  • Dan

Nice stats. Thanks for sharing and making me ponder the roster cuts even more now instead of doing my office work. :)

  • dave

ok its time to say it
    if caseys in any shape
bring him back…..we need help in the middle without steve in there
an gradkowski sucks and is going to kill someone
    with those passes
wonder why no one has kept him
    BRING BACK CHARLIE BATCH …..
he could play in his street clothes
    besides
    have u watched #5 really……really

  • Eric

I am still gagging and puking when I think about the Landry Jones pick when they could have taken a TE or a CB. Carter won’t go now that Robinson was traded. We do not need Alvester or Batch at RB. I hope they keep Dunn and use him in trick plays on offense as well as KR/PR. Most of all, 7 O-Linemen is SCARY!

  • Rob H

Agree with those who say Hawthorne has to make it, I don’t think there is anyway that a CB with his measurables and upside would not get poached from the practice squad.

  • Robert tay

Baron batch is adrain Robinson was delt to Philadelphia we keep only 4 running backs and if we keep guy whipthum were in deep trouble,he’s terrible and I’m being nice bout it too.hes a wasted roster spot gut him now and save us all the headache

  • Robert tay

We need 6dbs William gay will cost us two games by him. Self.

  • Robert tay

Their are no available ol we could pick up off the waiver wire,so we go with 7 and hope someone gets cut and we pick them up,otherwise our second string linemen are just the worse I was scared to watch guy whiphum lol lol lol he will be cut first he’s lol lol a complete joke.

  • Matthew Marczi

Last year, they only carried 9 for a couple of days, because DeCastro was quickly placed on IR, so saying they kept 9 last year is not really representative of what happened. In order to be designated for return, a player has to start the season on the active roster, otherwise he would have gone on IR before the season started.

  • Shannon Stephenson

I had Arnfelt making the squad dropping TaAmu to the PS having Woods be the back up NT. Carter at OLB not because he deserves it just more that he has a few years in the system. I had Palmer instead of Johnson at TE and Hubbard our 8th OL once again due to no one better but Batch would be dropped at HB for Hubbards spot.

  • joed32

I think that if they were going to keep Robinson on the 53 they wouldn’t have traded him. He looked good in some late action preseason games last year but not this year and he has never gotten a sack. Jones is very similar to LSH, you’re right about that. So maybe LSH’s injury is worse than we know.
