Steelers CB Cortez Allen Has Knee Surgery Friday Morning

Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback Cortez Allen has missed several days of practice so far in training camp due to what was initially characterized as knee discomfort. On Friday, head coach Mike Tomlin said via statement on steelers.com that Allen had minor surgery on his right knee earlier in the day and that it was done now in order to allow him enough time to rehab.

Also according to Tomlin, the surgery was minor and and it will have no long-term effects on Allen\'s return to the field., which should be in a couple of weeks.

I posted on Twitter Thursday that this was a fear of fine being as he had been sidelined for quite a few days. At least they are taking care of it now and hopefully he will be ready for the start of the regular season at the latest.

In the meantime, William Gay will most likely be filling in for Allen opposite Ike Taylor and Curtis Brown will come in to play the outside in the sub package as Gay shifts inside to play the nickel.

About Dave Bryan

I am, I'm me. 40 something, retired and a life long Steelers fan.
  • steeltown

Well #%@! …..atleast its now and not 3-4weeks from now

  • steeltown

Looking on the bright side, atleast C.Brown and Willie Gay will both get 1st team reps throughout training camp and preseason. Also, Isaiah Green and Victorian will get more 2nd Team reps throughout this process as well and hopefully Hawthorne can return soon, PLEASE

Time for a couple of these guys to rise to the occasion

  • Chris92021

Curtis Brown better take full advantage of this.

  • steeltown

    Indeed

  • Ahmad

Well there goes that number 1 rated secondary.

  • JohnnyV1

You kinda felt this one was coming.

  • StrengthOfVictory

Are people forgetting that we’re still a week away from the FIRST preseason game? And that there are FOUR of them? You guys do know that Week 1 is more than a month away, right? Just checking. Step away from the bridges, people.

  • steeltown

Yes agreed, plenty of time to rehab and return for the regular season but missed time is missed time, you never want one of your starting CBs to have missed the entire training camp and preseason

  • StrengthOfVictory

If Tomlin says “a couple weeks,” I take him at his word. So he misses the first two preseason games. He could be back for the other two and practices in between. DeCastro and Spence’s injuries last year were devastating. This? This is nothing.

  • steeltown

I’d be ecstatic if he can play in the final preseason game

  • Matt Searls

except we needed cotez to get those reps… as long as hes back in a couple of weeks. like 2

  • steeltown

    Agreed

  • cencalsteeler

    Sounds similar to Bens procedure.

This is why some fans (like myself) questioned Tomlin and Colbert for not extending Keenan Lewis. In today’s NFL you need 3 starting caliber CBs. Keep Lewis. Extend Cortez next year at the same time you restructure/reduce Ike.

The ONLY bright spot is this appears to be temporary and we should get a good look at the back up CBs in the preseason games. Sit Ike. Let the young guys battle and show their skills. Maybe one emerges as the next Keenan Lewis.

  • SteelersDepot

Colbert said this morning they really couldn’t afford to. Plus, Keenan REALLY liked the idea of going back home to New Orleans.

  • Christopher Wilkes

Ugghhh, our cornerback situation is starting to get ugly. On the bright side, I guess this allows Brown some extended work on the outside with the nickel package, and I could also see Shark and Golden getting on the field more in a hybrid S/CB role.

  • steeltown

Yea I would think it would’ve hindered our ability to retain Foster and McLendon and sign Gradkowski, Spaeth & Gay which in all actuality were all necessary signings

  • NW86

And especially when he’s a 1st year starter. Yes, Cortez saw the field quite a bit last year as #3CB, and started a couple and looked promising, but he’s still a young guy that could really use the reps in camp.

  • 2443scott

seems db`s should be wearing braces too

  • Christopher Wilkes

From what I hear, Gay continues to get beat by AB, Brown is having mixed results, Victorian gets beat deep a lot, and Green is not doing much better.

  • Putter

I’m using training camp to get ‘panic’ reps in….

  • Dom

I think alot of people would be beaten deep by AB

  • Christopher Wilkes

I was actually just reading that Shark is having trouble defending crossing patterns, so unless he can improve on that I doubt he’ll see the field that much other than on special teams.

  • ATL96STEELER

I think they had intentions too keep Lewis, but the $ figure was far too high…until the cap goes up more than it has been lately it will be tough on most playoff caliber teams to have 2 CBs making Ike type money.

  • joed32

Yes, he wanted to go. People don’t think about that but it was his choice.

  • Steelers4Ever

One of many reasons Keenan Lewis should have been resigned. He wasn’t
being greedy as shown by his NO contract and the depth is just not there
right now to hang your hat on only one “potential” quality starter
behind him in Cortez. With all the injuries last year and the lack of
quality beyond Cortez, letting Keenan go is something that I just do not
    understand.

This isn’t about whether Cortez will be ready for
the season…. it’s about what’s behind him when the season starts even
if he is healthy. If there is a bright side, maybe this will build
depth through the added reps for the backups.

  • Jefferson_St_Joe

I think if there was a choice to be made with Lewis, it was him vs. Ike and his money.

Lewis represented youth and a few less dollars vs Taylor being a better and more experienced player on a team trending younger. I’m not sure I would have made the same decision as the Steelers on this one, but I understand it.

  • Michael Pearce

Wow, Curtis and Gay in for the unknown Cortez. Lewis was our best CB and now we are down to this and Ike’s last year. You never let a top CB go as easy as we let Lewis go.

  • Steve

Remember Shark is a safty and not a CB.

  • walter mason

do you have to be so damn blunt lol?

  • Shea Fahr

With Allen down, you want to sit Ike?? Preseason yes.

  • woundedvet

    Hahah!

  • woundedvet

Colbert said Steelers didnt get into bidding war. Therefore Steelers apparently didnt offer as much $ as the Saints did. So it was about the MONEY, & I dont know why an observer changing the story now. If Keenan took less $ than Steelers offered him, I havent seen that.

  • woundedvet

Exactly. Where anyone on here now came up with Steelers offered Keenan more but Keenan took less $ to go to N.O, if thats the reason then Colbert would have said that.

  • John A Stewart

GET HAWTHORN READY NOW PLEASE I CAN NOT TAKE GAY!

  • SteelersDepot

I CAN”T TAKE YOU POSTING IN ALL CAPS. WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH YOUR KEYBOARD?

  • joed32

They didn’t offer him more because they knew they couldn’t win without breaking the bank. There was just no point. He could only go so high and no more. Couple that with the fact that they liked Allen so much they felt that losing Lewis wouldn’t be that bad. No one said the Steelers offered him more but if the offers were close he was going to choose NO.

  • John A Stewart

HEY FRUITCAKE, I’M SORRY! DAMN I DIDN’T KNOW I WAS BEING GRADED! GET A LIFE OR GET A PUPPY!

  • Christopher Wilkes

Ummm yes I know that, Steve. But, it’s already been discussed with the media that Shark will get some snaps in the slot, and they did exactly that at practice, and that’s where he had trouble with the crossing patterns.
