Search For The Steelers Eighth Offensive Lineman Continues

Now that the first preseason game is in the books for the Pittsburgh Steelers, I\’m not sure if we\’re really any closer to knowing which offensive lineman will be the eighth one on the final 53 man roster.

While we know Kelvin Beachum will be the sixth and think we know John Malecki will be the seventh, there were only a few clues as to who the eighth might ultimately be against the New York Giants.

Being that Guy Whimper was the choice to succeed Mike Adams at left tackle once he exited the game Saturday night, you would have to give him the slight edge over Justin Cheadle, who took over at left guard for Ramon Foster before moving to center later in the game.

Heading into the preseason, I thought Joe Long might get a chance to compete for the eighth spot, but being as he didn\’t even see the field at all Saturday night, it either means he is injured or not in the running. Perhaps he will get a shot next week when the Steelers face the Washington Redskins in their second preseason game.

For all we know right now, the eighth offensive lineman might not even be on the roster as the Steelers scouts are likely out watching the other teams in the league play in hopes that a player whom they view can help them will get released during one of the two cut down dates.

To be continued…

I am, I'm me. 40 something, retired and a life long Steelers fan.

I don’t like anyone after the first 7. Sad cause we need at LEAST 8. Here is hoping someone makes a stupid mistake and cuts someone that can help us.

  • steeltown

Well.. at this point.. it sure looks like it would be Whimper as the 8OL.. with Joe Long and Cheadle to the practice squad

Obviously way to early still, injury or stellar play could slingshot someone. If Joe Long comes back and plays well, showing versatility playing on both sides over the next few weeks he could be that #8 backup swing OT

  • Bell Cow

I was very disappointed with all the back up linemen. Unless there’s a vast improvement over the next 3 games, they’re going to need to search the waiver wire after teams make their final cuts.

  • Bell Cow

Lord help us if Whimper makes this team and ever gets playing time. None of these back ups, except Beachum, would make the cut for another team.

  • steeltown

Malecki held his own surrounded by inferior OL players like Hubbard, Batiste and Whimper.. he’s easily our #7

Looking forward to seeing Joe Long getting an extended look

  • Shannon Stephenson

It sure did not look to good although I wasn’t able to watch the game how I wanted to because I was at work but I did not see anyone really step up.

  • Shannon Stephenson

disqus suxs…try to change to a real name and it will not let me

  • Shannon Stephenson

    well…guess it did. :)

  • VaDave

Another Flozel Adams type would suit me fine.

  • MP34

I’m actually concerned enough that the Steelers should consider a minor trade if nothing becomes available after the cuts to 53. There is no line depth beyond Kelvin Beachum.

  • cencalsteeler

I believe in your last paragraph. Colbert should have his buzzard suit on scouting for prey.

  • Richard Cetrone

Losing faith in Colbert. Resigning Max Starks should have been a must.

  • cencalsteeler

Starks isn’t mobile enough in the ZBS. Don’t lose the faith Richard!

  • Bell Cow

Keep lying to yourself into thinking either of those players are any good.

  • steeltown

Malecki held his own and Im am looking forward to seeing Joe Long… neither is a lie

But, you’re welcome to continue with your negativity
