Steelers Waive G Nik Embernate Injured; Sign T D\’Anthony Batiste

The Pittsburgh Steelers announced a roster move on Saturday as undrafted free agent guard Nik Embernate has been waived injured and free agent tackle D\’Anthony Batiste has been signed to take his place on the 90 man roster.

Embernate tore his ACL and MCL on Thursday and his surgery will be forthcoming. Assuming he clears waivers, Embernate will revert back to the Steelers injured reserve list likely for the rest of the season.

There were high hopes for the San Diego State product, who was a high-priority undrafted signing by the Steelers. While there was no guarantee he would have made the 53 man roster out of training camp this year, Embernate seemed almost certain to be a strong candidate to make the eight man practice squad.

Batiste has been around the league for a while and started 10 games for the Arizona Cardinals in 2012 at left tackle. As we mentioned Friday evening, the Louisiana-Lafayette product allowed 12 sacks, 7 quarterback hits and 35 hurries on 425 pass plays last season, according to Pro Football Focus.

In adding Batiste to the roster, it now means that undrafted free agent offensive lineman Mike Golic Jr. has been moved back inside to guard. Golic opened up the offseason playing the right tackle position after playing both guard and center while at Notre Dame.

Was Embernate wearing a knee brace? If so, then the knee brace would seem to have limited value in guarding against severe knee injuries.

Don’t know and hard to tell by the picture of him in cart. Almost looks like a brace is by his side, but really unsure

  • MexSteeler

Kaboly said he was wearing the brace

I thought it’s already been medically proven that those braces don’t do much to help against severe injuries, only minor ones?

    Batiste & Whimper, oh brother…

  • James Kling

I know, right? Hoping they don’t make final cuts.

Not a good move, but if all he does is play backup and spot starter while a starter is getting an equipment issue looked at I’m okay with it. Probably more of a veteran depth move than anything else.

Wouldn’t be shocked to see either Whimper or Batiste get cut before the end of the preseason or both if the rookies look good as potential backups.

Embernate was a kid I had huge hopes for. Maybe he can heal up and come back even stronger next year. As far as Batiste goes, I really hope he is just another camp body to take the wear and tear off Adams, Gilbert and Beachum..He is Deplorable at his job.

We could also wonder if the injury would have been even worse without the brace. Or maybe not all braces are created equal.

  • SteelerFanInMD

I don’t think it can get worse than tearing an ACL and MCL.

  • Shannon Stephenson

Had high hopes for the kid…his career isnt over but wanted to see what he could do….get better soon because we need you embernasty…we have batiste the whimper on our team.

  • Stephen Dale

didn’t exactly replace Embernate with equitable talent. Seems like another camp body at best. Whimper & Long must really be bad if the Steelers are hijacking guys off the street corner……

  • steeltown

Agreed. He should clear waivers and revert to our IR hopefully he can contribute next year
As far as the Tackles currently on the 90man, I think most are camp bodies being that Adams and Gilbert are receiving work on both sides and Beachum and Foster can both play Tackle.. Whimper ‘might’ make the cut or maybe they just go with Joe Long on the PS
